On April 17, 1970, the three Apollo 13 astronauts miraculously returned to Earth after one of their ship's oxygen tanks exploded, forcing them to take refuge in the lunar module.

Launched on April 11, this one, like the previous Apollo missions, set out to explore the Moon and bring back rocks as well as to practice some experiments there. But while the three astronauts were supposed to land in a crater, they were never able to reach their goal.

The three astronauts noticed that the oxygen was escaping outside. Damaging the pipes of another tank, the explosion ultimately made the module completely uninhabitable, losing the supply of water, electricity and oxygen. Despite their attempts, the crew then had only one choice: to take refuge in the lunar module. However, when the accident occurred, the spacecraft was already more than 300,000 kilometers from Earth, excluding any possibility of making a U-turn and obliging to continue the journey to the Moon. In contact with the ground teams, the three astronauts then considered several all complex means to manage to resume the way to our planet and get out alive.

During the entire return, the crew found themselves completely dehydrated and set a record that no Apollo mission had reached: Jim Lovell lost 6 kilos and the crew a total of 14 kilos, 50% more than what previous astronauts have lost so far. But when he managed to return, it took a little less than 4 days for the module to land in the Pacific Ocean and for the crew to be rescued.
