In the 16th century, the Aztec king, Montezuma decorated his palace with poinsettias as a reminder of gifts from their gods and the debt repaid with human sacrifice. Later, in the 17th century when Franciscan Christian missionaries arrived in Mexico, it became part of the nativity procession, and was called the Christmas Eve flower (la flor de Nochebuena) because of its bright red color, which symbolized the blood of Christ. There are several folk tales in Mexico that include the poinsettia. One Mexican Christmas story tells about a little girl who is heartbroken she cannot afford to buy baby Jesus a gift. As she is crying, an angel appears and tells her to gather a bundle of weeds.
