Marissa Parkes

Brown Bag Lunch Talks

Like I mentioned in my discussion post, one of my greatest challenges was being discouraged. I advertised everywhere I could, but I felt like I was unsuccessful when it came time for my first talk. I got deeply discouraged, and by the time I got to the second talk I felt like I had failed my project. That is when my wonderful family, fiancé, and Mrs. Starr from Calhoun gave me nothing but support. I was reminded not to be discouraged because professionals struggle to get their audience numbers higher at first. We all have to start from the bottom and build our way up. Now I look back and see that even though my audience numbers were low at first, the people who did show up got to benefit from these knowledgeable speakers.

Since I already explained I will choose a different challenge, getting people to respond to the question prompts. Its quite discouraging when you send out email prompts and people do not respond. I have found that the best methods for gathering information are doing lengthy interviews in person, while keeping email communication simple. So all my interviews and Q&A packets were handled with in person candidates and I plan to keep the emails as simple as possible with a google form with a few questions for quantitative data.

Firstly, the daunting nature of what I could do and the great options for teaching that were available to me. Secondly, experiencing burnout from trying to do too much with any project. One of the biggest setbacks that occurred was when I needed to redesign the release mechanism for the rocket I wanted to use for the students. Fortunately, this ended up being a great opportunity to improve the design and make a better teaching aid. One of the greatest aids I had throughout this project was my family and the faculty at Calhoun. My family consistently encouraged me on what I was trying to do, and the faculty helped me plan it out and teach the best I could.

This semester has been the busiest one yet, and I struggled to dedicate enough time to complete my project. However, I eventually developed a consistent schedule that allowed me to bring it to life. As my project progressed, it was difficult to get people involved. To promote my donation drive, I created physical flyers, social media posts, and emails to spread awareness. Despite this, it felt like none of my efforts were producing the results that I desired. I enlisted my friends and family to help spread information about the drive. As a result, we have collected a sufficient amount of supplies for the Downtown Rescue Mission!

I received a phone call last week from one of the leaders of the shelter who saw my volunteer application and is curious about our project, so I need to get back to her at some point. We’re still interested in volunteering at at least one of the adoption events so that we can get a lot more experience with helping the dogs and the other volunteers there. Since we were able to get the research portion of our project done, we will be able to present data on what donations Huntsville Animal Services needs for dogs, and we can present our findings on the responsibilities of taking care of a dog and what health benefits a dog brings.

I originally had my project planned to be run in May, however LifeSouth had a complication so we had to move the date for it. Then in June we were going to do it again and again LifeSouth had a conflict with the event. Finally, in September (with a different point of contact) I was able to fun the blood drive and finish the toy drive.

My name is Izzy Nichols. My partner, Rachel Waters, and I are working on a capstone project titled “From Our School to Yours”. The goal of our project is to strengthen the relationship between Calhoun and the homeschool communities of Madison County. We have made significant progress in the past few weeks, scheduling presentation dates at three homeschool groups.

However, this process has not been without challenges. I would say the biggest problem we’ve faced is a lack of communication from the communities we’ve contacted. It was very difficult to schedule presentation times because the leaders of the homeschool communities would forget to respond to our messages for weeks at a time. It delayed our project calendar, forcing me and Rachel to be flexible where we would have preferred not to be.

Thankfully, we are overcoming these challenges and are pleased to report that by mid November, we will have spoken to three homeschool communities.

I will start working on my second shelving unit Monday. After checking with one of my instructors, I am going to follow through with the changes that I had been thinking about after I finished the first shelving unit. The primary change will be removing some of the shelves. My original drawings had seven shelves, but my second unit will be reduced to four shelves. This will reduce everything, time, weight, and material usage, without compromising the structural integrity of the shelves. I also plan to use a different metal for the shelf surfaces. The stainless steel that I used for the first shelving unit is going to be very strong, but it is also significantly heavier than I expected. Other than those two changes, my design will remain the same.

We have talked to multiple people and filled out volunteer forms, but we have not had much luck getting in touch to do animal events yet. Talking to a few of these people, it sounded hopeful, but it is very hard to get answers sometimes. We have been told to fill out some of the volunteer forms we did but ended up never really getting any responses until one recently, but it has not led to anything. Now that the weather has cooled though they said that they are going to start events again though so hopefully we can get more going in the coming weeks.

Lucy Scarborough

Reaching Calhoun for Christ

The greatest challenge I faced while working on my Capstone project was coordinating the timing between contacting the Huntsville campus coordinator and ordering my literature from Mercy & Truth Ministries. I knew that the literature would take roughly a week to arrive after ordering it, so I wanted to get it ordered as soon as possible. However, I first needed permission to distribute it at my table on campus. My correspondence with faculty lasted for about a week, slightly longer than I had planned. Fortunately, the timing worked out perfectly and I was able to get my literature ordered with plenty of time to spare once it was approved. A secondary challenge would be the wind blowing over my canopy tent while I was set up on campus. This was obviously quite an issue in the moment, but I do not believe it negatively impacted the results of my project whatsoever.

Kaylee Adams

CCC Artist League

The biggest challenges I have faced with my capstone project have been related to student outreach and time management. This semester has been convoluted with work and medical issues with me, so spare time has been few and far between. However, this is a cause that is very important to me, regardless of how everything in my personal life has affected my leadership ability. Finding free time to dedicate to my work has been a struggle, and it's become more difficult as the semester has gone on. However, I've got to keep trucking.

SkillsUSA: Where Skills Become Careers

One of the biggest challenges I faced was gathering reliable information and engaging students. I had limited access to detailed public data on student outcomes, and the small sample size made it difficult to generalize findings .Another major challenge was approaching students and starting conversations about something many of them were unfamiliar with or uninterested in. Finding students who were actually willing to engage and have meaningful discussions was challenging.
