The Tripitaka is a three-part collection of the Buddha's teachings. It includes the Sutra Pitaka (Buddha's discourses), the Vinaya Pitaka (rules for monastic discipline), and the Abhidhamma (philosophical explanations of the teachings). These texts were compiled after the Buddha's death and reached their complete form in the second century AD during the Fourth Great Council. Originally written in Pali and Sanskrit, they were later translated into various languages and spread worldwide.

Heading

The Peaceful Expansion and Global Influence of Buddhism

Summary

Buddhism originated in India and expanded peacefully throughout Asia, where it took root and coexisted harmoniously with local religions. It played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social landscapes of countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The spread of Buddhism led to the emergence of two major branches: Theravada, which is practiced primarily in Southern Asian countries, and Mahayana, which spread through East Asia. Vietnamese Buddhism is unique for its early adoption of both Theravada and Mahayana practices, as well as influences from Confucianism and Taoism.

Today, Buddhism is one of the major world religions, with over 325 million dedicated followers, and it significantly influences more than a billion people worldwide. Despite being mostly concentrated in Asia, Buddhism has seen growth in other parts of the world, including America and Europe.

Guiding Principles for Disciples in Buddhism

Buddhism provides rules for both laypeople and monks to achieve spiritual freedom through disciplined living. Key practices include following the Five Commandments (Ngũ giới) for basic ethics, practicing the Ten Good Virtues (Mười hạnh) in actions, speech, and thoughts, and following the Noble Eightfold Path (Bát Chính Đạo) for right living. Monks follow the Six Points of Unity (Lục hòa) for harmony in the community. Buddhists also strive for the Four Immeasurable States of Mind—kindness, compassion, joy, and detachment (từ bi hỷ xả)—to develop compassion and inner peace. These practices guide Buddhists toward a virtuous and mindful life.

Thay Pagoda is located at the foot of Sai Son mountain in Quoc Oai District, Hanoi, a sacred place surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. It is a remarkable architectural complex situated on the sacred “dragon jaw” land, integrating religious structures like Ha, Trung, and Thuong Pagodas, bell towers, and temples. The layout embodies Buddhist symbolism, with the surrounding landscape resembling a dragon drinking from a lake. The architecture blends traditional Vietnamese design with Buddhist elements, using materials like laterite, Bat Trang tiles, and gilded wood. The complex features statues of Amitabha Buddha, Tuyet Son, and the Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara. The water house on Long Tri Lake, likened to a pearl, hosts water puppet performances, adding to the spiritual and cultural experience. The pagoda’s location in a limestone mountain range offers both religious reverence and natural beauty, creating a tranquil and sacred atmosphere.

The pagoda’s structure, with its beautifully carved trusses and clay-covered dharmapala statues, embodies centuries of craftsmanship. The corridors that hold statues of the 18 Arhats enhance the spiritual experience, while the bell tower and drum pavilion evoke a sense of tradition and grandeur.
