Summary

Buddhism originated in India and expanded peacefully throughout Asia, where it took root and coexisted harmoniously with local religions. It played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social landscapes of countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The spread of Buddhism led to the emergence of two major branches: Theravada, which is practiced primarily in Southern Asian countries, and Mahayana, which spread through East Asia. Vietnamese Buddhism is unique for its early adoption of both Theravada and Mahayana practices, as well as influences from Confucianism and Taoism.

Today, Buddhism is one of the major world religions, with over 325 million dedicated followers, and it significantly influences more than a billion people worldwide. Despite being mostly concentrated in Asia, Buddhism has seen growth in other parts of the world, including America and Europe.

The founder of Buddhism, who was born around 560 BC into the Sakya clan, the son of King Shuddhodana of Kapilavastu (modern-day Nepal). After abandoning a luxurious life, he discovered the truth about existence and the root of human suffering, revealing the path to salvation. He became known as the Enlightened One, or Sakyamuni, and his teachings were later formulated into the doctrines of Buddhism.

Question:

Why did Siddhartha Gautama abandon his luxurious life?

Buddhism provides rules for both laypeople and monks to achieve spiritual freedom through disciplined living. Key practices include following the Five Commandments (Ngũ giới) for basic ethics, practicing the Ten Good Virtues (Mười hạnh) in actions, speech, and thoughts, and following the Noble Eightfold Path (Bát Chính Đạo) for right living. Monks follow the Six Points of Unity (Lục hòa) for harmony in the community. Buddhists also strive for the Four Immeasurable States of Mind—kindness, compassion, joy, and detachment (từ bi hỷ xả)—to develop compassion and inner peace. These practices guide Buddhists toward a virtuous and mindful life.

Buddha's teachings address key questions about the nature of the world and the destiny of humankind. Central concepts include Dharma, Anitya, Hetupratyaya, Sunyata, and Anatman (no-self). Samsara represents the cycle of rebirth, linked to Karmavipaka (karma) and the twelve Nidanas. Buddha emphasized the importance of understanding these concepts to escape suffering and achieve enlightenment (Nirvana) through ethical living and the Four Noble Truths

Thay Pagoda, located at the foot of Sai Son Mountain in Quoc Oai District, Hanoi, is one of the most ancient and sacred pagodas in Northern Vietnam. The pagoda has a long history, built in the 11th century under the Ly Dynasty, associated with the life and career of Zen Master Tu Dao Hanh, one of the figures who influenced Vietnamese Buddhism. He was not only a religious monk but also a famous physician, geomancer, and founder of the traditional art of water puppetry in Vietnam. Standing out on the lake is the water pavilion, where water puppetry performances, one of the unique folk art forms of Vietnam, regularly take place.
