For a university that stresses so much on the mental health of a student, it is very ironic to see this amount of workload being given. For mechanics of materials, if the universities want to make the standards like cambridge, might as well prepare us for that instead of dropping a 1 hour bomb test. I don't think it's the students problem because statisticly, 90% of the students from dubai, malaysia or edinburgh would not have sufficient time to finish. If the university have given a quiz sample like the test, I believe there wouldn't be any complaints because a lot of student would have finish. For A1 and A3, we students feel like the lecturer would just give us an assig and pop off, even when we ask ques they don't fully answer it and worst is that there's no support session for student who's bad at that particular subject. As for a2, the lecturer wouldn't reply to anything through emails or chat. I was wondering if the system is just giving us materials that we would study on our own without lecturers. I feel like lecturer is there to support us, they don't have to tell us the answer, if they want us to think, they could have just give us hint and make us think like Dr Suganti and Dr Angus. They deserve an award for making student life enjoyable. If 1 or 2 students complaint is the student fault. Now i believe every student is very unhappy with the teaching system. I hope that university would make a change for a better environment for student to study in. Some of us dont even get to have the weekends off because we need to prepare for assessments and do assignments that were released early, but the material was delivered one week prior to the due date of the assignment which was really unfair (the A3 assignment for our mechanics of material). I know you may think that one weeks time is more than enough to accomplish an assignment, but bear in mind that we also have other difficult subjects to keep up with, along with ongoing group assignments which require time consuming communication between groupmates and preparations for assessments that take up a lot of valuable time that should be used for assignments but cannot be due to it being allocated to other parts that will contribute marks to our subject. THERE COMES A POINT IN TIME WHERE WE WILL JUST BURNOUT AND I AM ALREADY AT MY LIMIT.

For an example, the mechanics A3 test was released in week 5 but the lecturer completed the topic in week 8 which was the original week for the submission and they extended the the submission date by 1 week and expect us to complete in a week. Even the fluids grouping for project 2 was released late by 1 week and they extended the deadline by another week which is adding pressure towards the end of the semester. The lecturers don't listen to the students. One of our classmates brought up the issue about the time frame for the A2 Mechanics test but the lecturer completely ignored it. The lecturer says the question is designed to be answered in 40mins but in whos perspective. They should stop comparing lecturer to students. The fact that the experience is on online learning which they are taking advantage of student’s workload and lifestyle because of academic misconduct last year. Coursework having up to 4-5 group assignments per week (depending on course) and 1-2 individual reports. It only increases the time spend on short term deadline assignments; thus, less time spend in class or long-term deadline or non-core course or exam prep. Each group expected a level of contribution or whatever they can cope with. Juggling priority every week will slowly pill up and eventually falls if the management is not maintain. Lecturers have not considered the management of student personal and basic responsibilities. What about the changed in groups? It filters out the students leaving the course but not the workload being presented in both hybrid and online modes. Those who done hybrid mode I full respect because online mode only needs to be in one place at a time. 

I have stressed out to my limit before leading to depression but not to the extent to be always in front of the computer. I have survived this year because of the close friend to keep myself in check and in progress with the work. Students hardly spend time working together at one time at the same place. That loneliness can affect mentally and emotionally. 

My suggestion is the uni has to re-strategies the approach. Multiple assignments is not the solution to helping the student to achieve academic achievement and adapt work life. I don’t enjoy the coursework presented but I came to study engineering whether I like or not. If the 2nd semester continue with the painful path, I feel bad walking away from Engineering.

Due dates is surely an messed up with very lack of organisation and co-ordination between the other subjects,tho due dates are set for 3 weeks but only the so-called teaching ends 1 week before the due date which makes no sense to anyone ,switching from the due dates of the assignments to the content of them ,for example the A3 assignment qn b we only were given 3 slides about in the lecture slides and despite the fact ,the lecturer went on and just read the slides and there was no teaching involved what so kind and it works for that for this whole subject ,our malaysian lecturer for part2 would go in the global live session and would start stuttering and take long pauses while “reading slides” which until now no teaching is involved which ofc would take us out of our concentration and make us more confused and that definitely would reflect on our assignment even for the same assignment q1 we would be given only 1 qn in the lecture with no tutorials and would face another qn in the assignment which is no good as we are not well prepared and not been well taught by the lecturer which gets me to think what r the standards that lecturers are accepted for to teach in this uni and aso ask whether “slides reading” is one of the standards or not? .now get to the last point which is coursework percentages ,i am not sure but i really think that timed assessments especially those one who is only 45 minutes times shouldn’t be awarded more than 10% of the whole semester but in our case more than 20% which feels unfair tbh ]]> 2021-11-11 08:31:27 UTC https://padlet.com/marcusooikeanboon/zitmf8v7gn8xiqkm/wish/1883645699 Workload and expectations https://padlet.com/marcusooikeanboon/zitmf8v7gn8xiqkm/wish/1885777790 The only time I'm not working on course related work is when someone calls me out. Even then, I'm still swamped with assignments and lectures to catch up on. I hope this gives a clear picture of the workload we're experiencing compared to the other courses in heriotwatt, and even for the students in other universities. For the longest times, I thought that this was normal and somehow convinced myself that this work culture is normal.
