To go to the movie... I'm sory. I just can't." Jonthan probably feels really upset at this moment because he does really like Sundara. It probably would have felt more awkward if it was from his part of view because he was the one to be rejected. Jonathan might have also felt kind of angry that she said no because she wants to stay true to her culture. Soka enforces Cambodian traditions on Sundara, especially that girls are not allowed to talk to or date boys. In addition, Soka plays the role of the antagonist throughout most of the book, but she drastically changes after Sundara starts crying about how she thought she was guilty for killing Soka's baby. 

Before - "Rebuked, Soka turned on Sundara a look of purest loathing. 'I wish you would go,' she said evenly. 'Get out of my sight.'" (Crew 172)

After - "'It's true.' Soka sniffed. The Grandmother is important because she is a symbol of the culture they left in Cambodia.

Kelly is another important character because she was Sundara's first friend in America and she is her support and guide for this new American life.

For example when Soka is being completely unreasonable and blaming Sundara for everything, NAro steps in and says "Responsibility!For 4 years I have heard nothing but responsibility when it comes to our  niece. Is that all you think of her?A child needs affection too. You are too hard on her. You've given her all the discipline and none of the love."
