The text has structure, has a purpose, kids can identify or connect with it, does not convey inaccuracies, and is diverse in nature of the content to include as many cultures as possible, in my case. Authors of these texts have done lots of research for their book and the illustrations are accurate and not misleading.  

Text Set Choices
For the texts in my text set I have everything from picture books,  books written in free verse poetry, nonfiction books and articles,  and chapter books for my 6th graders. I have several selections available for all of my learners. I have included read aloud videos as well as most of the texts I have selected have an audio book component for my ELL learners and struggling readers. The Newsela articles have the ability to change the reading levels to support all readers. I have a music video to capture the introduction to culture. Each of the selected items in my text set has been reviewed based on my definition of quality.

Lesson
Students will have access to these text throughout our unit on culture. We will kick off the unit by doing a text frenzy with the nonfiction texts, A True Book Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Oceania. The True Books will give us some background on each continent in regards to the sections on culture. We will then watch the video, Around the World and look at the images on culture. Each of the texts will be available for students to check out. I will be giving many book talks on the books and some will be read aloud in this text set as well.
