My opinion of this book is that is is very well crafted to this topic, because the author is writing Manny's thoughts and feelings, he is not narrating the story. You really feel Manny's point of view and his trouble with deciding the lesser of the two evils.

The author's style in this book is a young teenaged boy's thoughts. Everything from the tone of the authors voice to the vocabulary used all indicate that the author is writing from Manny's thoughts.

The plot develops very rapidly in this book with a long climax. Every major escalation in the plot has to do with something that the gang does that is bad. The fireworks that the gang shoot at the school is an example of this. Another escalation is when the gang gets heroin, and makes the cul de sac their hiding place. After these two events, the rest of the story is the climax, where things are at their worst. The falling action is when Manny gradually decides to do the right thing

The theme of my book is 'choose the lesser of two evils' and 'do the right thing not matter what'. Manny had to choose between getting in trouble and possibly losing his friendship with the other guys, or let a drug abusing, alcohol consuming, violence driven gang to endanger the streets of his neighborhood. He chose the lesser of the two evils, and did the right thing.

As the book goes on, he becomes more confident and concerned. At the very end, he was proud and happy that he did the right thing.

In the beginning of this book, Manny starts middle school with his friends that he has known since kindergarten; not long after, his friends make up a gang called the Conquistadors, and they start getting involved in vandalism, violence, and alcohol. In the middle, the gang starts to get their hands on drugs including herb and heroin. Manny goes along with the gang, but he and his friend Henrietta despise the acts of drugs and violence that the gang does. Eventually at the end, after a huge fight where two boys go to the hospital, Manny decides enough is enough and reports the gang to the police.
