I think the Melafind is a great device that will help reduce the cost and needs for unnecessary biopsies. It will also save the patient some pain as biopsies can be painful. I also believe the Melafind can assist with saving a life as it can aide in the detection of early melanoma.

As melanoma is the most common form of cancer in the US, the Melafind is a tool used to assist in the detection of early stage melanoma. The Melafind gives additional information about a mole or skin spot to a doctor to determine if it is necessary to biopsy or not. It does not give a definitive diagnosis. The Melafind "uses an illuminator that shines light of 10 wavelengths, a lens system that creates images of the light scattered back from the lesions, and a light sensor to assess tissue up to 2.5 mm beneath the skin's surface" (EBME, n.d.). The Melafind gives the patient immediate information regarding a specific mole and the characteristic details if it is potentially dangerous.
