To talk about experiences, events or states that began in the past and are continuing in the present, or to answer How long…? questions, use the present perfect with for or since:

Present Perfect + for + a period of time.
Example: I’ve known Jenny for five years.

Present Perfect + since + the moment when the experience/event/state began.
Example: He hasn’t seen his family since January.

                                                  hair. I wear glasses, but I only started wearing them about a year 
                                                  ago.

                                                  Home: I live in Brighton on the south coast of the UK. I used to live  
in Birmingham but we moved here when I was ten.

Friends: My best friend Olivia still lives in Birmingham. We started school on the same day in September 2005! I miss her. I left school in July and I started college three months ago. I’m doing a beauty therapy course. I’m really enjoying it.

Me and my phone: I got my first mobile phone when I was 13 (can you believe it?). My parents were so mean. Now I can’t live without it!

My working life: I work in a clothes shop in town at the weekends. I got the job three years ago, when I was 16. It’s a bit boring, but it’s money!
