  • On April 30 Dewey's lookouts spotted sight of Luzon the main Philippine island. 

  • The Night of April 30 under the darkness the squadron slipped by the defensive guns of Corregidor island and into Manila Bay. 

  • After dawn the American fleets located the Spanish fleet. 

  • The U.S. fleet was well armed and well staffed compared to the Spanish fleets. 

  • The Spanish-American War has its origins in the rebellion against the Spanish rule that began in Cuba in 1895.

  • The Explosion of the Main causes 260 deaths out of the 400 crew members that were abroad.
  • 10 out-of-date warships anchored off the Cavite Naval Station. 
  • At 5:41am, at a range of 5,400, yards from the enemy Dewey turned to the captain of the flag ship. He said “You many fire when ready, Gridley.”
  • The war ship that many of the american soldiers were stored was named the Olympia.

  • Dewey's full name is George Dewey. 
  • Was born on December 26, 1837. 
  • He was born in Montpelier, Vermont. 
  • Went to the Naval Academy, and graduated in 1857. 
  • In 1897 he was named commander of the Asiatic Squadron. 
  • He was also the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Theodore Roosevelt. 
  • The victory of Manila Bay made him a hero. 
  • Thought about running for president, but instead  published his autobiography.
