One was fiction and one was nonfiction. Students also interact in "fresh reads" every week where they answer some multiple choice questions and one or two open ended questions. These test check for comprehension because in order to answer the questions the student had to have comprehended the story. Some of the open ended questions ask them to make inferences or draw their own conclusions, which both can only come from comprehending the story. The pictures below are pictures of the two tests the students took before report cards went home. The fresh reads throughout the grading period were also accumulated into their grade as well as various other writing assignments. Literacy assessment includes more than cognitive activities; it also includes a range of practices and perceptions, including beliefs about literacy, dispositions toward literacy, and self-efficacy regarding literacy. -ncte.org

They also put a version on their class dojo, this is an app that allows them to stay connected with the parents. The parents can ask questions whenever they arise and open communication is kept between parents and teachers at all times. Effective partnerships are based on mutual trust and respect, and shared responsibility for the education of the children and young people at the school. They are tested multiple times each year and assigned a best fit letter for reading. Students go "book shopping" each week at the beginning of the week and select a few books from their best fit level. Students are tested through DRA's as well as dibbles and all play a factor in determining the child's best fit reading letter. In this book students learned about the difficult route Jack Johnson took to eventually becoming the first African American Heavyweight Champion. He worked odds and ends type jobs while facing discrimination from his white counterparts who refused to fight him. The students learned about the jobs Jack Johnson performed and drew a picture of what that job might look like. This is curriculum as activity because students are being read a book and are engaging in activities that allow them to question thoughts and ideas. “Interactive read-aloud is the foundation of a community that shares literary understandings through thinking and talking together.”-Fountas and Pinnell

When students read at the carpet I would try to stand near the carpet to hear what they are talking about. The students talked about what was happening in their book and would tell stories of similar experiences to each other. Multiple times I heard students helping each other with different words and they made connections to the story they were reading for the week on some occasions. I think having a collaborative reading time is a great thing to incorporate into a classroom because students can learn off from each other.
