A song created by Lyle1324, posted on YouTube. The lyrics of the song is the same as the poem “IKWTCBS” written by Maya Angelou. Basically, the author of this song just add some melody into M.A.’s poem and sing it. The lyrics reflect the theme about struggles in minority’s lives, such as racism, sexism, insecurity, poverty, abuse, etc. and the people who went through them, caged birds. It has the same title as the book “IKWTCBS” and the same author, Maya Angelou.

I found a detail about gender roles, however, it is not in the song lyrics. So, down below in the description of the video, Lyle1324 wrote: “A young man took his own life last week. I did not know him well, I just sang in a choir with him. I can only hope that choir was a source of peace for him like it is to me. I wont pretend to understand what he went through, but no one deserves to feel so alone at that age. This poem made me think of him so I put it to a tune...” So, the author is a woman and she made this song for the guy that she met and for herself.

A song written by Alicia Keys. The song is a recreation from the poem “IKWTCBS” by Maya Angelou. The theme of the song is about outward appearance. “Everyone comes to stare at me / With so much joy and reverie / They don't know how I feel inside / Through my smile, I cry (Keys)”. It is similar to the book “IKWTCBS” because one theme of the book is also about appearance. “Uncle Willie, why do they hate us so much?"

Uncle Willie muttered, "They don't really hate us. They don't know us. How can they hate us? They mostly scared. ( Maya 197)”. So, white people were racist because of the outward appearance of the black people.

“Still I Rise” is also a poem written by Maya Angelou. The song “Still I Rise” lyrics is the same as the poem but in a musical melody. The song was created by the owner(s) of the channel “Caged Bird Songs” on YouTube. The poem’s theme is about racism. “You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I’ll rise. (Maya)”. The poem also has some sense of gender roles and sexism. “Does my sexiness upset you? / Does it come as a surprise / That I dance like I’ve got diamonds / At the meeting of my thighs? (Maya)” I think that this verse is about the incidence between Maya Angelou when she was a child and Mr. Freeman.

Lead Me Lord is a religious song written and sang by Gary Valenciano. The main theme of the song is about how God lead people in their lives and guide them. The song is related to the book “IKWTCBS” because, in the book, Momma is a very religious person, she praised to God every morning she woke up. “During the picking season my grandmother would get out of bed at four o’clock and creek down to her knees and chant in a sleep-filled voice, "Our Father, thank you for letting me see this New Day ... Jesus Christ, Amen." (Maya 7)” The song is also about waking up and praise in the morning. “Lead me Lord, lead me by the hand / And make me face the rising sun / Comfort me through all the pain / That life may bring / There's no other hope / That I can lean upon (Valenciano)”

“Song of the Caged Bird” is a violin song created and performed by Lindsey Stirling. It’s a melody song, it doesn’t have any lyric. The reason why I pick this song is because the overall theme is really well-portrayed in the song. I think the theme of the song is about someone who got “caged” in darkness, and with her talents, she works her way out of the dark and light up her own life. In the song, Stirling’s talents are playing the violin and dancing. As a comparison to Maya Angelou, her professions were literature creator, author, director, and Maya was also a musician and a dancer.
