Chapter 3 Response by Chelsea Smith

"When we look at mathematics in the world and the mathematics used by mathematicians, we see a creative, visual, connected, and living subject. Yet school students often see mathematics as a dead subject - hundreds of methods and procedures to memorize that they will never use, hundreds of answers to questions that they have never asked."

-What can we do instructionally to make math come alive?

We need to find things that are able to made more hands on and more real world. I have found success in my classroom when I can take problems and find ways to talking about how you could use this skill
in real life and how it connects to other things you have learned and will learn.

I think one way to make math come alive is through the use of patterns. Kids see patterns everywhere and when they can see them in math, it helps deepen their understanding.

I think through the use of Project Based Learning, we can make mathematics more engaging. When we help students see the real world application of mathematics and how they can use what they are learning across different subjects, that's when it becomes more exciting and meaningful.

I believe the "play" with numbers is such a great way for kids to get more comfortable with using numbers in formal questions. When playing with numbers by using models and digit cards, kids can discuss and look for different ways numbers are connected. Kids need more time to experiment with numbers. This allows students to feel more comfortable when attacking problems in their learning.

I think these real world relationships are important for kids to realize. Some of the PBL activities we are working on are definitely more engaging for all groups of students.
