Constantinople is located on the Bosporus which is the strait that marks the division between Europe and Asia. This means that the city is based upon the border between the western and eastern worlds. During the late Roman Empire it was one of the wealthiest and largest urban centers in the Eastern Mediterranean due to its strategic position commanding the trade routes between the Aegean sea and the Black sea

Constantinople has played an important role its entire lifespan. The area was settled by the Thracian around the 13th century B.C. and was colonized by the Greeks 600 years later. In 150 B.C.E. the city was peacefully acquired by the Roman Empire, only to be razed in 200 CE. It was rebuilt by the Emperor Constantine in the following years, who gave the city its name. The city quickly became the most prominent city in the empire, and eventually the capital. When the Roman empire split into east and west, Constantinople headed the eastern empire for almost an entire millenia after the fall of the west. It was not until 1204 that the crusaders sacked the city and made it a part of their very own "Latin Empire". This weakened the city, and made it vulnerable to the Ottoman empire, who captured the city in 1453, ending 1500 years of western hold on the city.

Constantinople was a prime hub in a trading network that at various times extended across nearly all of Eurasia and North Africa. Citizens benefited from unhindered commerce, free from heavy taxation.
Ottoman control over much of Asia and the Near East facilitated the exchange of not only goods but also ideas, crafts, skills and customs along the trade routes that passed through Istanbul, bringing new influences and cultures together and promoting innovation in the Ottoman arts.
