It was a big part of the hundred years war, which had been going on for 78 years. The experts does not know the location of the battle precisely, but they belive it was fought in the narrow strip of open land between the woods of Tramecourt and Azincourt. 
English and French army fought the battle. The English army was led by Henrik V. The French troops was led by the so-called “officer of France”, Charles d`Albret and lots of noblemen from the Armagnac-party. The French king himself, Karl VI could not fight, caused by sickness and mental problems.

The preferred material to make the longbow out of was yew, which is classified as a closed-pore softwood. It is the best wood to make longbows from because it`s easy to work. Yew is one of the hardest softwood, still it has a remarkable elasticity, making it ideal for products that require springiness, such as the longbow.  The earliest longbow known from England was found at Ashcott, 2665 BC

This made them underestimate the longbows.

The narrow area made chaos for the Frenchmen, and made them an easy target for the longbows. Also, the plowed, muddy ground made a gain for the Englishmen, because the French troops had to go through deep mud.
