OVERVIEW: Many students sit in classrooms and hear but are not listening to what is being said around them. This is a skill that needs to be taught and addressed at all levels of education.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this activity is to increase the students’ ability to listen and to understand what is being read and/or told to them.
OBJECTIVES:
After listening to the story, students will be able to orally explain the conclusion of the story.
Students will be able to list three ways that the tigers in the story relate to themselves.
Students will be able to clarify why they would rather someone read to them or why they would rather read the material themselves.
This activity can be used as a guidance activity. The emphasis is for students to think about what they are hearing and to be able to respond to the story. This activity can be used for several grade levels but it seems to work best with freshmen and sophomores.
RESOURCES/MATERIALS:

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
1. Read the story, The Indispensable Tiger.
A powerful old tiger, the leader of the pack, was preparing to go on a hunt. Gathering the other tigers about him, he said, We must go out in the plains and hunt, for the winter is coming. You young fellows come with me; perhaps you will learn a thing or two.
The young tigers were pleased to hear this, for the old fellow had hitherto shown no interest in tiger development. He usually left them behind when he went hunting and they were tired of doing nothing but keeping order among the cubs and performing other routine tasks.
The first day out, the old tiger spotted a herd of elephants. Here’s your chance, Bernard, he said to one of the younger tigers. Look at it as a challenge. But Bernard had no idea how to go about hunting. With a roar he rushed at the elephants who just ran off in all directions. It looks as though I’ll have to do the job myself, said the leader philosophically. And so he did.
The next day, the tigers came upon a herd of water buffalo. Suppose you take over now, Jerome, said the old tiger. Jerome, reluctant to ask silly questions but determined to do his best, crept up on the grazing buffalo. He leaped straight at the largest of them, but the big buffalo tossed him to the ground and Jerome was lucky to escape in one piece. Mortified, he crept back to the group. No, no, no, NO! said the old tiger. What’s happening around here? Where is the performance I’m looking for? But you never taught us how to do it! cried one of the young tigers. The old tiger was in no mood to listen. The rest of you stay where you are, he growled, and I will do the job myself. And so he did.
I can see, said the old tiger as the others gathered admiringly about him, that none of you is yet ready to take my place. He sighed, much as I hate to say it, I seem to be indispensable.
Time brought little change. The old tiger sometimes took the younger ones along with him on hunts, and occasionally he let one of them try to make a kill. But having received no instruction, they were unequal to the task. And the old tiger still made no effort to teach the others his tricks! He had forgotten that he himself was a product of tiger-to- tiger coaching.
One day, when he had grown quite old, the tiger met a friend, a wise lion he had known for years. Before long, the tiger was launched on his favorite topic of conversation: the lack of initiative in the younger generation.
Would you believe it? he asked the lion. Here I am getting a bit long in the tooth, and I still have to do all the hunting for my pack. There seems to be no one of my stripe around. That’s odd, said the lion. I find the younger lions in my pride take well to instruction. Some of them are carrying a good bit of responsibility. In fact, he continued, I’m thinking about retiring completely next year and letting the younger fellows take over.
I envy you, said the tiger. I’d take things easier and relax myself, if only I had a little leadership material around me! The old tiger sighed and shook his head. You can’t imagine, he said, what a burden it is to be indispensable!!
2. Discussion questions:
a. What does indispensable mean?
b. What did the tiger mean when he said, What a burden it is to be indispensable.
c. List the tigers in the story. How does each tiger relate to you as a person.
d. What did the lion tell the tiger?
e. Why did the lion seem to be the wiser of the two?
f. How does the whole story relate to people?
g. Listening is important. Would you rather have something read to you or read it yourself?
Why? Why does it make a difference?
TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:
After talking about the story, discuss how important it is not to just listen with our ears, but also to watch the person talking and how their eyes, hands and even their bodies talk to us. To understand involves more than just hearing.

+ Bạn nào đoán đúng người còn lại đang miêu tả ai thì bạn đó sẽ được điểm của xúc xắc. Vd: Bạn A miêu tả, bạn B đoán đúng, mà bạn B thảy được 3đ thì bạn B có 3đ.
6. Cuối game, HS quay về nhóm của mình và tính tổng số điểm.

2. GV phát cho mỗi HS 5 mảnh giấy nhỏ có các số ngẫu nhiên từ 1-15 tương ứng với đồ vật trong hình.
3. GV cho HS xếp thành 2 hàng đứng đối diện nhau. Bạn A hỏi, bạn B trả lời, sau đó đổi ngược lại là xong 1 lượt. Mỗi lượt thì GV sẽ vỗ tay/bấm chuông cho Hs dãy A/B đổi thứ tự 1 lần (lùi xuống/tiến lên).
Lưu ý: HS miêu tả món đồ vật có số tương ứng mình đang cầm trên tay. Vd: Bạn A có các mảnh giấy số 4,6,7,9,12, thì bạn chọn 1 trong các đồ vật đó để miêu tả.
4. Sau mỗi lượt thì 2 bạn sẽ cho đối phương rút 1 mảnh giấy của mình. 
Nếu bạn rút đúng số mà đối phương đã miêu tả thì bạn được lấy mảnh giấy đó.
5. Cuối game, HS quay về nhóm ban đầu của mình và cùng gom các mảnh giấy lại.

1. GV chuẩn bị sẵn nhiều hình ảnh của những người nổi tiếng trong các kiểu tóc khác nhau. GV dùng máy chiếu lên bảng. Mỗi lượt GV sẽ chiếu 2 hình khác nhau. Các từ vựng về tóc sẽ nằm lộn xộn và úp mặt chữ xuống sàn.
2. GV chia HS thành 2-4 nhóm. Mỗi nhóm sẽ có 1 bạn (A) quay lưng lại với bảng và1 bạn khác (B) sẽ mô tả hình ảnh.
Cách mô tả hình ảnh: NÓI NGỌNG - chỉ nói nguyên âm. Bạn B có thể chọn để mô tả 1 trong 3 loại từ về độ dài/kiểu dáng/màu của tóc.
3. Bạn A lắng nghe và chỉ có duy nhất 1 cơ hội để chọn từ và dán lên ngay dưới bức hình có từ đó.
4. GV cho điểm mỗi lượt theo xúc xắc. Nhóm nào có điểm lẻ trong khoảng 13-21 điểm sẽ thắng.

Stage: Practicing structure
1. GV chuẩn bị sẵn 6 hình ảnh của những người nổi tiếng trong các kiểu tóc khác nhau. GV dùng máy chiếu lên bảng.
Lưu ý: GV nên để cấu trúc (thứ tự tính từ) để Hs yếu có thể xem.
2. GV chia HS thành 3-4 hàng (mỗi hàng 5 HS). Tất cả HS phải quay lưng lại với bảng (nơi chiếu hình các celebs). Sau đó, GV cho người ở đầu hàng mỗi nhóm (người đứng gần bảng nhất) 1 cái bảng con và marker.
3. Mỗi lượt, GV sẽ mở hình ảnh của 1 celeb, cũng chỉ có HS đứng gần bảng nhất mới được quay mặt lại xem. Sau đó, mỗi HS sẽ viết 1 từ lên bảng con rồi vừa chuyền cho bảng tiếp theo và vừa nói lại cả câu đó cho bạn.
4. Bạn ở cuối hàng sau khi hoàn thành sẽ cầm bảng giơ cao lên và hô to "Finish".
5. GV sẽ cho TẤT CẢ các nhóm có câu trả lời đúng được thảy xúc xắc 1 lần và nhóm có quyền quyết định có nhận số điểm đó không.

Act 1 : Introduce the discriptions vocab
Ask students to say any words they know to describe people' appearance, give some examples such as: long hair , black eyes..... 
- Give students the list of new vocablary divided by hair, face, nose, and facial features.
Act 2:  Present three pictures of different people in the lesson. Ask good students to describe their appearances first using the sentence form:
 S/He’s__________. S/He has________. 
And the whole class will feel free to raise their hands if they know the picture he/she is describing
- Next, Play " Magic box" game , teacher will devide the class into 2 teams randomly . Each member will each team will pick a piece of paper from the box in which they see the letter of the person and they will use both body language and structure to describe this person so that their team members can guess the answer.  The teacher will ask good students to play first. In case , weak students don't know how to describe the picture , the teacher can give them some suggested questions : Is the person a man or a woman ?  Does this person have curly hair? What color is his/her hair ?
Finally , The team with more correct answers will be the winner.
Act 3: Taliking and Drawing
 Give one student a new picture and give the partner a blank sheet of paper.
The students with the picture will describe the photos to their partners.
The students with the blank papers will draw the person that their partners describe.
Afterwards, have students compare the drawings and photographs; this can be very funny.

Gv và cả lớp sẽ kiểm tra câu trả lời , nếu trả lời đúng thì đội đó sẽ được thảy dice để dành điểm . Trước khi thảy đội đó sẽ chọn số chẵn hoặc số lẻ , nếu chọn chẵn mà khi thảy dice thảy vào 2,4,6 sẽ được X2 điểm , ngược lại nhận 1 điểm.
Tổng kết các lượt chơi , đội nào dành nhiều điểm hơn sẽ dành chiến thắng .

Gv chia lớp thành các nhóm học sinh theo trình độ : weak students and good students
- Với good students: Gv phát card bao gồm các thông tin khó và dài về một bữa tiệc sinh nhật. Nhiệm vụ của các bạn học sinh này là viết ra 5 câu hỏi cho các thông tin trong card.
- Với weak students : Gv phát card bao gồm các thông tin ngắn và dễ hiểu về các hoạt động hằng ngày . Nhiệm vụ của các bạn học sinh này là viết ra 5 câu hỏi cho các thông tin trong card. 
Cả lớp dán câu trả lời lên bảng , cả lớp cùng nhau bình chọn ra câu trả lời hay nhất , đúng nhất bằng việc dán stickers vào mỗi câu trả lời . ==> Trong hoạt động này khuyến khích các thành viên trong các nhóm sửa  bài cho nhau trước khi nộp để ghi được nhiều điểm nhất.
