Five of the elements that you can find in nucleic acid are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous.

Carbon atoms appear in the sugar of the nucleic acid backbone, and the nitrogenous bases.

Oxygen atoms appear in the nitrogenous bases, sugar, and phosphates.

Hydrogen atoms lie attached to carbon and oxygen atoms in the sugar and nitrogenous bases of nucleic acids.

The nitrogen containing bases of nucleic acids appear as pyrimidines and purines. **Pyrimidines are single-ring structures with nitrogen located at the first and third positions of the ring. Purines have a double-ring structure, in which a pyrimidine ring joins to a second ring at the fourth and fifth carbon atoms.

A phosphate group is attached to each sugar and composed of phosphorous and oxygen. This phosphate allows the sugar molecules of different nucleus to be linked together in a polymer chain.

i_am_pi. “Acid GIF by Pi-Slices - Find & Share on GIPHY.” GIPHY, GIPHY, 23 Mar. 2018, giphy.com/gifs/trippy-abstract-pi-slices-l3vR0BOPKtgPE1tgk.

7. How can knowledge about nucleic acid affect our health and nutrition?

Knowledge about nucleic acids, RNA and DNA, can affect our health in a beneficial way because can use the information based off of a parents DNA to predict if the offspring might get something bad such as a disease or get one of the parents allergies that they may pass down to them through a gene. It affects our nutrition because RNA uses the information contained in the genes to release it making proteins. And protein does many things for our nutrition such as making enzymes, and is a important building block of things in our body such as bones, skin and blood.
