Peanut Experiment

In the peanut experiment the chimpanzee was given a tube nailed to the floor with a peanut inside of it. After about 10 minutes the chimpanzee realized he could spit water into the tube to make the peanut float to the top so he could grab it. This is a very interesting experiment since water does not have a shape so it showed the chimpanzee having strong problem solving skills. This helps to show that psychology is a science since the researcher observes the monkeys actions then describes and continues on to predict that the monkeys will all be able to do this.

The slot machine was an experiment which the monkeys observed a researcher loading a grape into the slot machine and using it to receive the grape. The monkey learns the slot machine and predicts he can receive the grape if he copies the researcher previous actions. The monkey receives the grape as predicted. This shows most of the steps for a scientific experiement.

Puzzle Box

The puzzle box was an experiment that shows the psychology behind the monkeys actions. The scientist used a puzzle box which would reveal a treat once solved and it was demonstrated for the monkeys to watch. Once the monkeys were given the box the scientists observed that they had learned to retrieve the treat. Later the chimps were given an opaque box which was the exact same puzzle. This time the chimps understood they didn't need to do all the steps to solve it and could complete it more efficiently. The chimps were observed and described through their ability to understand rather than copy. This shows their behavior and is consistent with the testing.

Stone Experiement

The stone experiment consisted of food underneath a heavy stone. The chimpanzee could pull the stone off and retrieve the food but when faced with a heavier stone they struggled. The chimpanzee struggled for a while before he realized he needed help from someone else. This experiment consisted of observing the chimps actions then describing his behavior and later on be able to predict the monkey would ask the human for help moving the stone. These steps prove how the study was down to a science.

Defining Science and Social Studies.

Social studies can be defined as various aspects or branches of the study of human society, considered as an educational discipline. Yes the chimpanzees were being studied, but there was more to it than just studying behavior. Science can be defined as the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. This definition is more suitable for psychology. Psychology uses the pattern of observing, describing, explaining, and lastly predicting/changing. These 4 experiments provide evidence using scientific procedures to pin point a systematical study of the chimpanzees behaviors through the observations and experiments determining specific outcomes.
