The deaflympics are specific sports meant for deaf athletes who compete professionally. One of these unique sports is Beach Volleyball. This sport was established during 2005 in Melbourne, Australia.

Like every other sport, there are events for Beach Volleyball. Such as Caxias do Sol 2022, which was the most recent event. At Caxias, there were about 2,401 athletes from 73 different nations. Including brazil, who is the biggest country in South America.

Beach Volleyball for these players are very similar to actual games. The only requirements to participate in the game is they have to have a hearing loss of 55 decibels or greater in the better ear.

The first deaf olympics was known as the silence games. They were held in 1924 in Paris. With about 9 European nations participating. Eugene Rubens-Alcais created the deaf olympics.

To play you need to have lost a least 41 decibels or more. Hearing aids must be removed before the match starts. Deaf people prefer to use a flag which is visual and not a whistle.

Deaf Tennis History

American tennis players started with the Deaflympics in 1953. The mission is to increase awareness of deaf tennis to provide players with opportunities to participate in international Deaf tennis competitions. Deaf Tennis has a long history in Tennis in Britain and playing the sport requires little adaptations.

If you have hearing loss of 55 decibels or less in your best ear and a passion for tennis, you could be apart of the deaf olympics. When competing players must remove hearing aids before starting the warm-up before the match, if they don't they will be disqualified.

Things that are different in tennis:

Not being able to hear the net when it is a let and not hearing the umpire on line calls.
Not being able to hear whether your opponent’
Having to watch the ball extra carefully.
Playing indoors can be very distracting with echo, lots of background noise.
Balance and judgement are affected.
Cannot hear feet off the ground or the speed of the ball.
