         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Champaign Illinois Council on Religious Education was founded in 1940 by representatives of many religions, and the local school board later authorized it to offer free religious instruction. Parents were given consent cards to sign that permitted their child to take the classes, which were taught by Roman Catholic priests, Protestant teachers, and Jewish rabbis, all of whom were approved and supervised by the school superintendent.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In December 1947, the United States Supreme Court agreed to hear McCollum's petition for review and held oral arguments. The American Unitarian Association, the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, the Synagogue Council of America, and the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty also submitted briefs in support of McCollum's position. On March 8, 1948, the Court declared the classes to be illegal, ruling 8-1 in favor of McCollum and declaring the programs to be unconstitutional.</div>]]></description>
