As an avid and lifelong singer, I embarked on my journey with the German Language, hoping to use my high school foreign language requirement to help me learn to pronounce German words in songs. Following high school, I spent four weeks with Sonja (in the photo) and her family in the Black Forest. This is where and when my love for and fascination with German culture and its people began. 30 years later, Sonja and I remain best friends, and I have now been living in my culture of choice for 13 years!

I am currently a Gifted Education Talent Coach at Josef-Schwarz-Schule in Heilronn. I have spent mommy entire career in schools with international flair: SIS Fellbach, ISS Sindelfingen and what is now currently Waddell Language Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina. In Charlotte, I was a German Immersion teacher in grade 4 as well as Immersion Coordinator in a school offering immersion programs in German, French, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin (Chinese). I am a history and German language teacher by background but I have also had a range of leadership experiences. I was fortunate enough to be able to move to Germany in 2014 where I was the Director of Academic Affairs at Black Forest Academy, an international day and boarding school. I was in that position for five years and but unfortunately had to return to Australia at the beginning of last year.

I am incredibly grateful for my time in Germany and it highlighted to me the importance of ensuring that students develop and maintain global mindedness. While I hope to return to Germany and work in international schools there one day, I am currently leveraging my experiences from five years away in international schools to inform my own teaching practices here in Australia as well as contribute to the development of a whole-school perspective on intercultural learning and understanding. One of my most memorable intercultural moments from the classroom, in recent months, has been when one of my EAL/D students not only told me that having an interlingual worksheet that had both English and Mandarin on it meant that she could really understand the work and get it done more quickly but that the quality of her answers to the work was far better than it had been earlier in the year!!

I have three children – one in Year 10, one in Year 7 and one in Year 3. While we were in Germany as a family, they attended the international school at which I worked, as well as a local bilingual, dual immersion English-German primary (elementary) school. They developed a love of languages and other cultures and it has been wonderful to see how that has contributed to their own personal development. I have been married to my wonderful wife, Prue, for 23 years.

An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country. It can be given by both non-Indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our school has translated the Acknowledgement of Country into the languages that are taught at the school. There are more to come from what I understand (which is wonderful to see)…
