Introduction to Classical Music Canon

The classical music canon can be seen as the building blocks of the genre. Multiple different musical elements such as tempo, rhythm, harmony, melody, and many others set the foundation of what the general expectation of classical music really is. Because classical music originated hundreds of years ago, recreating the sound today calls for very strict guidelines and little room for creative innovation. Some of the most well-known composers such as Mozart and Bach are just two of the dozens of composers that worked to shape the way classical music is performed in today's modern society. Even though m our very own campus can you find students practicing their crafts using different pieces of these classical music works

The classical radio station played very traditional classical music. I heard popular composers like Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart all within the same hour. Most of the pieces contained the same musical elements that define many of the works. The works most commonly featured the general brass, string, and woodwind instruments one would see in a number of classical music pieces.

While walking around UNT, many different aspects of classical music is evident amongst the students who are a part of the music program. I've seen students carrying around brass instruments, practicing the drums and woodwind instruments, and a number of students using the pianos scattered around the campus. I can see the lasting impression that classical music from hundreds of years ago has left on today's society within our very own University.

The college of music has programs that sponsor a countless amounts of different musical events. Upon visiting the music building, I came across a list of every event going on through the year, and it was too much to even fit into one picture. The following picture was the most I could fit into the picture while keeping the text legible.

While listening to the classical music station I came across pieces that would be expected from a channel of that genre. I was able to listen to a work from both Beethoven and Mozart. Listening to the works made feel as if I was in the time period they were written in. The music made me feel calm and relaxed, and the choice of instruments just made both pieces come together so perfectly.

When thinking of music that has stayed relevant through hundreds of years, it can be hard to determine what it is exactly that makes music "successful". In Haefeli's work, she states that there are 3 building blocks to a successful musical work, "Notation...Musical Language...The concept of the work..."(Haefeli By outlining these 3 key factors, she illustrates traits that almost every popular classical music piece exhibits. She then goes along to say that the "losers" of musical history are "...the genres and styles that are left out of our mainstream study of music history."(Haefeli)
