Charles Darwin. His seminal work The Origin of Species, published in 1859, was

to have a fundamental influence on the ways in which the relations between

the peoples of the world were viewed. He concluded that evolutionary change

in the animal kingdom occurred through a process of interaction with the

environment, involving competition and conflict over resources.
