I chose this image because I feel like this shows off more of Hassani's cultural background/context. When I look at this image, I think it really expresses the ongoing situation in Afghanistan through the perspective of the women living there.

The effect: The religion in Purple Hibiscus play's a big part in Kambili's day-to-day life, as well as her family's. Catholicism shapes a lot of the beliefs of the family. It is one of the results of the colonization of Nigeria and the colonial effects are mentioned through out the whole book.

Importance: This is important because it is a big part of what shapes the family and it kind of blinds them to have their own thoughts. The family refers back to their religion and it is essentially what rules over the family, right after Papa.

I think culture and experience are factors that make up your identity. I believe that identity is who someone is as a person and that it is made up of different factors.

Is it problematic to be defined by one's experiences?

I think it can be but it isn't generally. Experiences don't shape a person fully and there is much more to them than that. You have to consider other things, like how they react to their experiences.

I think place of origin plays a major role on our identity. With our place of origin, there's a bunch of small factors such as language and culture that people come from and it can shape up a lot of beliefs and values.

I think experiences have a major effect on our identity because everybody has a different story that comes with the experience. It shapes up who they can be as a person because of how they choose to perceive that story and/or experience.

What are the factors that contribute to identity?

I think people, culture, and religion are the main factors that contribute to one's identity. They all play a role in day to day life that can affect someone's identity because it ties in with someone beliefs and values.

I chose this pic because the room/background had really stood out to me. I've seen her other work and I feel like Hassani uses more of a clean background to be able to illustrate her points, making her art the main focus. In this image, I feel as if Hassani is trying to have the audience to pay close attnetion to both the background and art.

Filmic Description: It is a live action shot/scene of how people tried to flee their homes to seek asylum/a better life. With live action shots, it helps to show the reality of things and possibly how they felt about things in their situation.

I define freedom as a human right because nobody should feel restricted in their choices or what they do. I think of it as a basic human right that because people should not feel scared of who they are and their experience.

How do you know if you have it?

I think you know that you have it when you're not afraid to do things or to speak out about things. You feel as if you have so many options!
