Nathaniel Hathorne was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. He added a "W" to his last name to make Hawthorne, so he wasn't in relation to his ancestors. He tried to suppress his first piece of work because he felt it was not equal to all of his later pieces. A lot of his work was dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity.
