         <description><![CDATA[<p>The El Niño phase of the ENSO is intensified by global warming, which is caused by climate change. During this phase, regions that are usually warm are cooler than normal, and regions that are usually cool are warmer than usual. Southeast Asia, including Singapore, faces hotter and drier weather.</p><p><br/></p><p>As a result, the Southeast Asian region experience disruptions in their activities. </p><p><br/></p><p>Agricultural producers may not be able to produce certain crops as the weather conditions do not favour their growth, resulting in a decreased agricultural yield and food security. This leads to decrease in supply of agriculture within their countries as well as a decline in exports to various countries. Thus there will be a decline of the country’s economy.</p><p><br/></p><p>Warmer ocean currents disrupt marine ecosystems, affecting fish populations and depleting the profit of those whose livelihoods depend on fisheries. As such, there are negative environmental and social implications.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another social implication is the conducive environment that El Niño brings which allows for the breeding of mosquitos, increasing the spread of dengue fever, a risk to health, which is especially and increasingly prevalent in Singapore.</p><p><br/></p><p>Increasingly, as global warming increases due to climate change, the effects of El Niño are intensified, now bringing about the possibility of triggering wildfires. This destroys forest and natural environments, as well as brings numerous harms and risks to the people living close by, such as the possibility of their house being burned down 😭😭😭</p><p><br/></p><p>However, with the increased technological advancements we enjoy today, it is not surprising that we are able to better predict the weather circumstances or temperature levels during the El Niño phase. We are also able to better mitigate the negative impacts that El Niño brings to our society, economy and environment, minimising the difference that it brings to our world to the best of our ability.</p>]]></description>

Intense rainfall could become result in floods and eventually, outbreaks of dengue. Floods are an inconvenience at worst due to Singapore's superb drainage system. However, with climate change exacerbating the effects of El Nino, it is possible that these floods could eventually overwhelm the drainage systems, resulting in significant damage being done to infrastructure. The warmer waters cause the Pacific jet stream to move south of its neutral position. With this shift, areas in the Southeast experience periods that are wetter than usual and have increased flooding. This will impact Singapore because we are an urban city which means there is more concrete land present than greeneries. Therefore, when there’s heavy rainfall and potential flooding, our country will only be able to sustain for a while due to the greeneries present and a good drainage system. After some time, effects will be amplified. </p><p>Moreover, the effects of El Niño affects marine life. If the supply of marine life decreases, it may potentially disrupt the food supply as well as Asians usually love eating fish etc. That’s potentially another problem for Singapore. Moreover, increased rainfall would mean the daily activities of the citizens will be interrupted which means productivity might go down and potentially affect the economy as well. Moreover, as for the environment, the effects might be severe as flooding would mean a lot of damage to the properties like the skyscrapers. A single spark in the forest may cause a wildfire to be spread very easily. Once ignited, the dried vegetation on the forest floors facilitates the spreading of the fire. For instance, India’s monsoon this year was the driest in 5 years, with initial estimates by the government suggesting the output of kharif crops—rice, maize, pulses and millets, all of which are harvested in Q4—is down year on year as a result. Thus, there would be rising prices in Singapore for our everyday goods. </p><p><br/></p><p>Moreover, with Singapore being a global trade hub, is very susceptible to El niño’s effect on the weather as it has caused disruption to maritime transport and affect trade flows and the global supply chain. This will affect Singapore by causing hotter and drier weathers.</p><p><br/></p><p>In the environmental aspect, what this means for Singapore is that it can be hotter and drier. With a decreased rainfall, temperatures are set to increase which can affect our agricultural productivity, as well as our water supply.</p><p><br/></p><p>As for our society, Singaporeans will feel more uncomfortable in the heat, leading to heat stress, increased risks of heat stroke and other health complications related to the increased temperatures of the environment. More Singaporeans would turn to air conditioning for comfort which in the long run can further contribute to global warming due to the large amounts of energy, electrical production needed to power it. The tourism industry is also affected as this increase in temperature can make it uncomfortable for travel, especially since Singapore is already a tropical country that experienced summer all year round.</p><p><br/></p><p>Politically, the Singapore government needs to implement measures to ensure Singaporeans are able to ride through this period of heat, and in the long run, the implications of global warming </p>]]></description>
