Find Where You Belong

I think the lesson of this novel is to find where you belong. Even if that means doing new things and attempting to do something extremely difficult and improbable. For example, Willow Chance managed to come back from her losses after her parents who adopted her died, without any relatives to help, and only accompanied by a poor family and a school counselor. She fought through hardships to get to where she belonged in life, and never gave up.

I firmly believe the lesson of this book club book is that loss can change you for the better. This is representative of Willow’s story in Counting by 7s, as she really thought she didn’t need her parents. Willow did not see her parents as a necessity, though she still loved them. After losing them in a brutal car crash, Willow realizes how dependent she was on her parents. She falls into a state of depression and grief after the crash, and comes out better than ever. She realized how important the people around her were, and started fostering those relationships. She slowly realized how the people around you are your soil, and it is important to plant strong roots in them, and how your roots can connect you to other plants in the garden.

Willow is a very strange girl, being an orphan of color adopted by a white family. She developed a love for all things nature at an early age, creating her own garden in her backyard. She then gets sent to counselor Dell Duke, being accused of cheating in a state test (which she didn’t) in 6th grade, and makes friends with Mai and Quang-Ha Nguyen. After coming home from counseling one afternoon, she discovers her parents are dead. Launched into a state of depression, she thinks she doesn’t matter in the world. Then, one afternoon, she asks Dell Duke to buy her sunflower seeds. She plants these. These seeds represent Willow’s journey after her parents die, growing and getting over it. After the sunflower seeds have sprouted, Willow writes a proposal to transform a patch of ground in Dell’s apartment, “The Gardens of Glenwood” into a garden to relocate the sunflower plants and possibly plant more greenery. This proposal gets accepted and Dell Duke becomes the building representative, due to the fact that Willow sent the proposal under his name. Eventually, “The Gardens of Glenwood” becomes an actual garden. In the end, she gets formally and legally adopted by the Nguyens, recuperating after her parents death.
