Meeting with Charcoal.

When I first encountered charcoal it beckoned me, to explore it even though I have had a base knowledge of the purpose of charcoal is, its limits and how it came to be. Nonetheless I was drawn to it, I wanted to experiment on it and experiments is thoughts acoording to Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. (2016) and thoughts creates itself in encounter. In the moment when I met charcoal I first wanted break it into chunks then I grinded and smashed it till it turned powdery during that process i had not expected to feel satisfied with the crunchy feel of charcoal as it was grinded. It has offered something new to me, a sensation that i would not assoicate to charcoal. From this i can i say i have encountered charcoal in moments which i focused on the present drawing from the experiences and materials immediately availabe, rather than aiming for predicable outcomes. Instead of directing learning toward specific results, it opens up “fields of possibility,”emphasizing what can emerge in the moment (Koepke, 2015, as cited in Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2016, p. 45)

References

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L.

Touching the fine charcoal evoked a memory from me when I was i small child waking up around the time my mother used to wake up to cook breakfast, she used to pick me up and put me dowm on the outside kitchen counter and hand me some charcoal and a spoon for me to play with and I distinctly remember trying to grind the charcoal to powder. from touching charcoal at that moment to the time I touched it in my play session created a type of kinship between me and the material for it has shared a memory with me and as Erin Manning (2007, as cited in Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2016, p. 47) eloquently said the propsotion of that touch in its very essense enables the creation of worlds where I touched in the other to invent a relation that in turn touches me.

References

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L.

After playing with the feelings of charcoal, I started to turn the A3 white paper into a blackish grey with the charcoal powder and soon lost myself to the way I was just stroking the charocal mindlessly however I subconsciously started to notice i was broadly stroking the fine charcoal powder to the rhythm of the music present in my studio moreover i started to brush the charcoal powder in a circular motion thus resulting in the imagery of endlessness, of infinite possibilities, this envokes a feeling of marvel as it hinted to me of how even with limited material, art is expressed, inspired and beared witness, By just being in the moment and just dwelling on it. I really associated with what Grosz (2008, as cited in Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2016, p. 47) said where being attentive is to take time with the chaotic and vibratory spaces of activeness that are co and re-composed” in the world.

References

Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition, Bydlo

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L.

I went out outside of the studio to explore what else I and the charcoal can do, as I stepped outsude a gust of wind blew past me making my A3 paper fly away because I had a loose grip on it. I chased after the paper until i caught it as it was stuck against the brick wall, as i caught it, i curiously noticed how the charcoal stick made an imprint on the paper, thid prompted me to trace the brick wall into a piece of art that captured my delight in my response on an creative outburst. I reponded to an encounter the other and it allowed me to see beyond, to be moved by it. I embodied the concept of response-ability where i felt and shared through my tracing of the moemnt i had and not merely acknowledging the other (Haraway, 2008, as cited in Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2016, p. 51)

References.

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L.

After my adventures outside, I came back in the studio and explored more on charcoal by making straight lines with the fine charcoal powder which during play session morphed into a sword in my aimless exploration from which i started adding lines and curves on the sword, therefore destorying it, then i merely scrambled the art i mad, making a flat canvas where i learnt i could draw on it.

It was during this realized on something that may fundamentally change my outlook on life. I was opening myself to thoughts which i have established is experimentation where i increased my capacity to act in this world and open to new perception and understanding (O'Sullivan, 2006, as cited in Pacini-Ketchabaw et al. 2016, p. 49). through my opening i have been engagingon the narrative and material as i have acted on it and as it has acted on me.

From this revelation i have come to understand the idea of what this assesment and this unit is trying to teach me. its not just about the end goal its also about you, your feelings and impact material has on the enviroment and you, how we are all connected through thoughts and complex emotions and motions.

References

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L.
