Strategy - How to Approach SAQs on Language Use

1. Identify the type of language use the question is focusing on. e.g. on figurative language like metaphor, irony, or unusual but effective choice of words? Pay attention to the question prompt or wording. e.g. Explain the metaphor...

2. Is the question asking you to explain the author's intention or purpose with regard to a choice of words? Is it asking you to explain the effectiveness of a phrase?

3. See the marks allocated for the question and apportion your answer as required. Always explain in the context of the passage.

4. Check your answer to ensure good language, the appropriate signal words are used and it is within the correct context.

Then, you're good to go! :)
