Social class. Jeanette was born into poverty which resulted in a lot of issues in her life which may have been different if she was born in to a higher class for example, she wouldn't have to had move around as much as she did growing up, and maybe her dad wouldn't have spent his time looking for gold. This affected her life a lot because I think that maybe they would have had a better childhood and wouldn't have had to go through all the trauma that they went through.

"I wondered if the fire had been out to get me. I wondered if all the fire was related, like Dad said all humans were related, if the fire that had burned me that day while i cooked hot dogs was somehow connected to the fire I had flushed down the toilet and the fire burning at the hotel. I didn't have the answers to those questions, but what I did know was that I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes". (Pg. 34)

When she said this, it was when a fire broke out in the hotel that her and her family were staying at.

This quote stood out to me because I found her perspective of this really interesting and I have never though about fire in that way. I stood out to me because it made sense and maybe what caused her to think think this way is she has been exposed to fire in traumatic events like when she caught on fire when she was little, and the fire that had just happened in the hotel.

One recurring thing that kept happening in the book was, all of the authors family constantly moving running from the "feds" and looking for gold to build the glass castle.

One significant event that happens in the book is when she caught on fire while boiling hot dogs. I think she chose to include this story because, it showed the readers how her family dynamic kind of is and it introduced her fathers strong personality. It also showed how her life at home was because she really loved being at the hospital and wanted to stay there forever. I think that that kind of explains that life at home wasn't that peaceful and at the hospital she could do whatever she wanted and could actually have 3 meals a day.

The writers diction when she was talking about her dad really explained how she felt about him. She used words like "Hero" and "Handsome" when talking about him, when in reality he wasn't that good of a person and he was violent when he drank hard liquor. He was a really smart person.

The house that they bought had no indoor plumbing and they were always electrocuted by the electric stove. "It had an electric stove, but the wiring was not exactly up to code, with faulty connectors, exposed lines, and buzzing switches" she got electrocuted so bad that it knocked her breath out and left her twitching on the floor. Their house was in very bad condition and they had a hole in the roof that would let the rain in the kitchen whenever it would rain.

I think because of their poverty, they have to go through things that they shouldn't have to go through. Like when they lived at their old house and the boy "raped" Jeanette, and when Erma molested Brian. All because the parents cant get stable jobs and they have to keep moving around and being on the move. If Rex got his alcoholism under control, then maybe he could find a stable job and get them out of poverty. The kids wouldn't have to get bullied at school and they wouldn't have to eat bad food.
