Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model

Breonfenbrenner's Ecological Systems theory, or ecological model, looks at how the world around a child affects him or her. The model starts out with the child in the center. From there it branches out into the microsystem. This system has the most direct impact on a child. It is comprised of teachers, parents, siblings, peers, and any other people/environments that the child is around often. The next system is the mesosystem. In this system, it is more about how the child's immediate environment interacts with each other. This could be the interconnectedness of school and home life or peers and siblings. Following that system is the exosystem. The exosystem is less of a direct impact and environment of the child, but it still influences the child's life. This could be their neighborhood, the workplace of his or her parents, media, etc. This impact can have more of an effect on the child's microsystem which causes that system to influence the child differently. Moving along is the macrosystem. This system relates more to the child's morals, values, cultural beliefs, and even the political or economic climate. These have to do with the individual child's beliefs and also the societal beliefs as a whole. The final system is the chronosystem. This system is an ever-changing system of both the family and the greater society.

Understanding this theory can give insight to understanding the development of a child. Preschool-aged children are beginning to gain more and more dimensions of each system, especially their microsystem as they begin school or day care. Putting those factors in context with their individual development allows parents and teachers to see where different domains are being nurtured and where other domains could be left out. Understanding the big picture rather than just taking the child as he or she is can allow for more patience and better education of the child.

Reference:
Psychology Notes HQ.
