Professional “Take Away” from Reviewing Resources

I felt a sense of relief when reading articles about self care in the counseling profession. As a new counselor, I was reassured to know that even the most experienced counselors may have moments when they become aware they have reached their limit. My biggest takeaway is that successful counselors create boundaries and are self aware of their own needs. In order to sustain a giving profession that results in secondary trauma, empathy, and compassion, a counselor must recognize the importance of self care when caring for others.

Reflection on Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession

School counselors work in a face paced, stimulating environment with diverse duties and disruptions. This can result in limited self care and time for reflection following a challenging counseling experience. I think finding a way to communicate my needs is essential to providing successful services. For example, finding a way to communicate, "I just had a really challenging interaction, and I need a few minutes to process before I can help. I will be there in as soon as possible".

I am very aware that exercise and sleep are major factors in my ability to make decisions, communicate, and maintain a sense of accomplishment. I also tend to want to accomplish too many things at one time. For example I am trying to complete district PD, graduate school, learn Spanish to speak to my emergent bilingual students, and read every book about counseling all at once.
My strategies:
1.Practice self care as I enter this profession are to recognize the impact of not meeting my physiological needs (sleep and exercise) on my mental health and take care of myself.
2.Create a plan, so that I am able to work on all of my learning goals without becoming overwhelmed. Develop a system so that I can see my progress and feel a sense of accomplishment.
