From the text, "My Favorite Chaperone", I learned that the main character, Maya, and her family have come to the United States from Kazakhstan, a country in Central Asia that used to be part of the Soviet Union. I remember that Maya's parents could not speak English very fluently, so she had to translate for them, at times. This would inculde during a time in the text when the author's brother, Nurzhan, had gotten into a fight with a boy named Ossie Nizhizono at Evergreen. The prinicipal at Evergreen, Mr. Shannon, had called in for his parents and Maya to come down to his school in order to talk about the consequences. Maya had crossed cultural crossroads because her family is Russian, so she had to speak English when she was talking to Mr. Shanamon and spoke Russian, however made Mr. Shanamon's words a little softer, for her father. As a reader, I felt more influenced from the text, "My Favorite Chaperone". This is because I have had times when I had to talk in for my own parents because they do not come from the U.S. They come from another country. However, I had been born in America, though. In my opinion, I believe that being from another culture can be difficult, challenging and inspirational, at the same time. This would be a great asset to the main character, Maya, because she would have a variety of cultures and language to explore and learn other than her own. 

In conclusion, the text, "My Favorite Chaperone", has influenced me the most as a reader than any other texts that I have read in the unit, through their cultural backgrounds and values. They had to leave Syria without their cat just to be able to live and I'm happy that their cat did get returned to them in the end. Also, it is a non-fiction story, but reads like a fiction story. Also in the text a author might blend real life experiences/facts with made up parts but you can still learn parts of culture in the factual parts so it not totally factual like non-fiction but also not totally lies.

The reasons why are because of the story giving a much more in-depth perspective on traversing cultural crossroads and trying to adapt to a new home, while also giving us a good view on what these people felt while traversing the cultural crossroads. Secondly, it also hit me on a personal level, because I've had to move multiple times across the country, as well as out of the United States. Finally, I also enjoyed how it gave a good look at the main character's previous culture and showing how it conflicts with the current nature of her new home. It shows that adapting to a new culture isn't so easy. Even when looking at a supporting character, they showed detail in their character as we could infer from their actions, how their old home was like.
