         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mahfouz began writing at 17 years old. He attended the Egyptian University, which is now Cairo University in 1934. He received a degree in philosophy, but worked as a civil servant from 1934 until 1971. He married Attiyatullah Mahfouz in 1954 and had 2 children named Fatima and Umm Kalthum. Over his lifetime, he produced over 350 short stories, 34 novels and 5 plays. Mahfouz was the first egyptian author to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which he won  in 1988</div>]]></description>
