Using Biology to teach global citizenship

Biology and the sciences are a great conduit to teach global citizenship. As teachers, we need to ensure that we are showing scientists of all races, colors, and creeds to show that scientists all over the world are contributing to our body of knowledge. In science, we have global problems, like COVID_19 and scientists all over the globe are working together to create solutions.

I think about DNA. Scientists all over the world have contributed to our knowledge of DNA and how we can use this molecule to modern medicine. The world scientific community has had and will continue to have to work together to make ethical decisions on how and why we should modify DNA and use DNA.

One of the major tenets of science in the scientific method is that an experiment/research must be able to be replicated and must be peer-reviewed and that this knowledge must be communicated/published for the world to see. In science, students need to understand that science is a bank of knowledge to which the world is all contributing.

Celebrating International Mindedness

I am going to have to go with unintentional celebration in this example. I love the website HHMI, which most biology teachers probably do. On this website, the activities, the beautiful videos, the lessons all show beautiful biology in action around the globe. Whether its studying ecological interactions in Gorongosa National Park, lactose persistence in Europe, lizard evolution studies in the Carribean, or the contributions of International Scientists, men and women, from every continent, this website and its lessons guarantees the celebration of international mindedness.
