Technology: To get to space they had to have the right Tech. This led to major advancements in knowledge and Technology.
Tension: With both of the countries militarising and advancing in other aspects the countries' Tension was at an all-time high. This had the world on edge.
Rivalry: The space race had both countries wanting to be better. Even in the Olympics, the rivalry was big. Even today we are advancing in Technology. 
We are still exploring space today and discovering new things everyday. This can be compared to us exploring the moon and learning about it.
