A water footprint is how much FRESH water you use when you buy, do, or make something. For example, when you take a shower, you are using 2 gallons per minute and when you take a bath, you use around 30 gallons in total. Also, it takes 500 gallons to grow the cotton and actually produce a pair of jeans.

In the early 1900's the world's water footprint stared increasing gradually. After that, the water footprint started to increase dramatically. The water footprint of 2050 is suspected (given the current rate) to rise almost 20% from the world's water footprint now. The world's current water footprint is 7450 billion cubic meters per year.

The average water footprint per person per day is 910 gallons. What this means is that each person uses about 910 gallons of water per day. This may seem like a lot but this number includes the clothes you wear, food you eat, and the actual water you use.

Having a high water footprint can effect your community and other communities around the globe. With a high water footprint consisting of non-necessities, other people around the globe don't have enough water for things they need. Also, with a high water footprint, your community will have less water, less often. If you decrease your water footprint, more people can have water for things they need and your community will have water for longer.

People experiencing droughts have, sometimes, been forced to decrease their water footprints. For instance, northern California has had a terrible drought that has caused many wildfires. So, the residents of this area have been more aware of how much water they use. Some examples are taking shorter showers, not watering their lawn, using rain water for irrigation, and not washing their cars. The world can use California as an example of how people can only use water for necessities. The world could do better if everyone did their part decreasing the water footprint.
