A student's ability to hear, identify and manipulate sound-phonemes. A phoneme is the smallest part of sound in a spoken word, and serves as the basis for all other parts of speech. Before a student can read a text they must first understand how sounds are the most important component of a word.

Blending

Blending is a skill which requires students to successfully identify a word through hearing the breakdown of its individual phonemes. Below is an example of how the word "fish" would sound using the blending technique. One example of how to use this technique can be done using simple clip art images. Each student will be given a set of cards to use. The teacher can slowly say a word by carefully enunciating each phoneme and the student needs to point to the image they believe the phonemes are representing.

Segmenting is a skill opposite that of blending. It consists of taking a whole word and separating the sounds. Segmenting and blending go hand in hand in order to prime a student for reading print text. Below is an example of how the word "cat" would sound when segmented. By using the same set of cards as the blending activity, teachers can ask students to identify the first, second or third sounds heard in the name of each image.
