They replaced the dragon boating with inflatable ones and this shows that the school is creative and cares about the students’ wellbeing as well as it is impractical to have the whole school to try out dragon boating. These activities were a very interesting and a good kickstart to our day and to warm us up with the students even though we only met them. They were really friendly and helpful and to learn about how students in Beijing learn about different subjects is very fascinating. They were very cozy with their Teachers and listen attentively at times, and we can follow them and listen to our Teachers as well in Singapore. After that we went to trishaw ride to look around the village and it was a very good experience for us as Singapore doesn’t really have these trishaw rides. seeing the people work hard to cycle people around even though the weather is so hot shows us that we have to work hard in whatever we want to do even if there are circumstances that cannot be helped. We went to the siheyuan to paint a face mask. It was a great cultural programme as we get to learn the different colours represents different personalities, for example, green represents short temper and doing things without thinking, yellow represents short temper, black and red represents bravery and intelligence and blue represents scheming. We also paint the masks based on the colours. From the lady over there, siheyuan means there are four courthuts facing the middle, it is one of the preserved architecture. The different courtyards hold different people such as a courtyard holds ladies, another holds men, another holds parents and grandparents and another hold the helper. In Singapore, the lease in Singapore is 99 years but in China, it is 70 years. However for this siheyuan, there are several generations that pass down this courtyards. The way they preserve their houses and their culture is really inspiring as nowadays, in Singapore, some of us would not be sure of the cultures. We went to laoshetea house as well after the dinner, to try the tea that they served us and some of the snacks that go along well with tea like melon seeds. There are shows being showed as well like magic shows, kungfu tea skills, shadow performance and wrestling show. If given a chance, i would like to study there as i felt that the facilities there were well equipped and of top notch. Another aspect of the school which attracted me was the relationship between their students and staff. This was concluded when a chinese female student came forward to speak to us and the teacher was with us as well. When the student left for her exam, she was telling the teacher about how it would be the teacher's fault if she does not do well for her 高考 in a joking manner. The teacher laughed and then replied you would definately do well. This was truly a heartwarming scene as the students there were all staying in the campus, away from their parents. It is obvious to see that they are very well educated and matured young adults. In the class I was sent to is a geography class , the student go through questions about human geography on population growth factor.Although I couldn't understand much of their lesson , I can tell that they were all proactive in their studies and pay almost full attention to the teacher. In the class , the student were put into groups to discussion on a range of question that they do not know, they will then explain to other groups about the questions they have. This is a good way of learning as teacher can be by the side looking at the students thought and correcting them. The students took on initiative to ask and also answer questions which we should all learn from them. 
After saying goodbye to them, where we went for the trishaw ride, it gives me a good image of the hutong in Beijing and the village vibe can be felt there. We then went to Siheyuan to do mask painting, we all made our very own mask and know how different colour tells about the mask's character.
Lastly we went to the laoshe teahouse to watch a show and also appreciate their tea and food while watching. It was very interesting, there were Beijing traditional wrestling , mask changing opera , and also puppet shows. We went to a beijing no. 35 Middle school to interact with the students.we started of by playing their game.First thing that impress me is that, we played 2 games, one of them was there is like a bamboo pipe and arrows, we have to stand 2m away and throw it in.this is a simple yet interesting way to let the students enjoy themselves when they are free. We were ask to play a dragonboat game where we need to need to sit on the inflated dragon and be in sync. This has made me learn why teamwork is really important in this game and if one doesn't cooperate the whole team will fall. Another  thing that really impress me is the way they have assembly. First i wonder will there be enough space for the whole school but it came to my surprise that there are only a few classes of students. Secondly was their speech because it is really interesting as they were talking about immortality. Lastly i really enjoyed that they sang the school song together and it really made me feel like they are very bonded.Lastly was the performance at the laoshe teahouse. It was really funny and interesting. For me the most interesting part of the play was the mask changing opera. They have many amenties available and I was impressed with their fluent English. 
 
 Attending the Chinese Literature Class inspired me to work harder in Chinese Language as I realised that I still have much more to learn and what I am learning now is not enough and not even close to their standard. I enjoyed the class since the teacher explained the poems very well and I started to appreciate chinese poems. I used to only appreciate english poems and I am grateful for this opportunity. 
 
 Also, Ive learnt the importance of filtering my words and thoughts befofe expressing them. I have learnt that it is very important to think twice before talking to the China students and we had to leave a good image since we are guests. As a guest, we have to show our appreciation and keep comments to ourselves, as a form of respect. 
 
 Moreover, I have also learned the importance of showing initiative and that we have to step out of our comfort zones and communicate. This was pretty challenging but it was an enriching experience has I am now better at striking conversations with strangers(not very good yet).
 
 The visit to the Hutong and Yandaxie Strest had provided me with the following learning points:
 
 -The trishaw uncle told me that he had to ride the trishaw regardless of the season and he would carry an average of 10-15 passengers per day. It kind of struck me that I am very lucky to be able to live in a comfortable environment and have pocket money without thinking about the money
 Whereas some people living in poverty have to do hard and physically straining labour just for a few dollars. 
 
 -I went into a tea shop and the shop owners brother, (not that sober) was talking abt how Singapore shld established good relations with China and that Singapore would suffer without that relation. I wanted to express my opinions but I remembered that Mr Chong reminded us to not respond to any political critic or statements and just laugh it off. I realised that political topic is a VERY sensitive issue cuz I kind of got offended since I could not express my stand since that may start a fight. From there, I learned that I should never talk abt political issues since it may be offensive to some people and cuz unecessary conflicts or even fights. 
 
 
 The visit to the tea house made me realise that tea is being seen as a signature drink and cultural practice in china. At the school visit, i learnt how proud the citizens of China were of their country, during the flag raising ceremony. This made me compare the pride they have to the pride we have in Sg. At the classroom experience, i couldn’t imagine how learning core subjects in mother tongue would be like in sg. However, ive noticed some similarities in the way of teaching where the teacher reviews a particular topic w the students then give them problem sums afterwards.(MATH) Then we went to Hutong street where we saw how they used to mail out postcards. The post office is still around since the 1800s. During the facemask painting, i learnt some interesting traditions of their families like only the parents and grandparents can sleep in the west side room. They use the help of the bell and drum tower to determine when to wake up. This somehow reminds me of some taboos from my culture too and a little about the kampung spirit. Lastly the Laoshe Teahouse also amazed me because drinking tea and the opera performance is a tradition since a very long time ago. The tea and the few small food allowed me to taste a bit of the chinese cuisine.

-they are exposed to diff kind of lessons like designing which we hv in riverside too. Their artworks are also displayed in the campus lobby
-the education route in china is diff from sg,  6 yrs in xiao xue, 3 yrs in chu zhong, 3 yrs in gao zhong then they can further study by going to university
-they hv the opportunity to go overseas every term and experience like attending conferences which will help them in the future
-the students hv to live in the campus as the school is away from the city and thus they are separated from their families. Im grateful that i am able to live with my family instead of being away from them

We were invited to Beijing International No. 35 school. It was an eye opening for me as the school is not what I imagine it to be like. The school's facilities surprised me even more. Take gym as an example, the school's gym is twice as big as our school's gym. It has all the equipments. The canteen is also very special, unlike our canteen, the school's canteen is sort of like a buffet. First come first serve. There was also a chopstick machine, where when you pull out a pair of chopsticks, new ones would be nearly coming out. Q1. Guo Mo Ruo thought that he himself is a cultural person, he opened the coffin of the second last emperor of China and at the moment when they opened it was full of treasure items and 2 person accompanying him which were his wife, when the coffin was opened, the items oxidized and became ash. This tells me that in the coffin the 2 wife of the emperor have to die with him. This also tells me that in the past they don’t really know how to preserve one’s body as when the coffin open they became ashes.
Q2. the difference between Beijing and Singapore is the houses. In Beijing some of the houses are 四合院. it is a house with 4 buildings facing like a square shape and on right side is for the boys to live in and on the left side is for the girls to live in. living in that kind of house, they don’t have toilet, so they have to go out to public toilet and share the toilet with other people, but for showering they have it at their own house, so they can shower at home. As for Singapore we have like HDB, condominiums, penthouses and all the basic facilities ( water, electricity  & gas ) in the house. 
Q3. I enjoy the laoshe teahouse as they practice a lot to be able to perform and let us watch. it is the same saying as yesterday 台上十分钟台下十年功。and the tea house they did not just show one performance, they performed many different variety of performance for people to watch.

Theirs was very different from ours in Singapore.]]> 2019-06-10 15:49:37 UTC https://padlet.com/pang_choon_guan/beijingday3/wish/366733669 Day 3, Wen Ni https://padlet.com/pang_choon_guan/beijingday3/wish/366736425 we visited 35 international school, yandaixie street, face painting and laoshe teahouse. in the morning the tour guide shared with us a idiom. 天要下雨，娘要嫁人meaning what meant to happen will happen. the visit to 35 international was very pleasant. we get the ride the ground 龙舟dragonboat and play chinese darts where the darts were thrown into a bamboo cup. i managed to throw one in! through interacting with the students i realise their system were not much different to ours and they too choose between science and art stream. sitting in to their chinese literature was very fruitful. i get to follow through their analysis on ancient chinese poetry and learn about a chinese poet 李清照 and how her works evolves as she ages and gains life experiences. the teacher was very kind in classifying our doubts. going yandaixie we learnt about its origin and how it use to be selling tobacco. it is no surprise to see many shops selling pipes there me and my friend met a very nice tea shop owner who gladly treated us to tea and share with us tea knowledge. we ended up getting tea from her. i realise areas of china were specific in their roles eg. a street to sell tobacco, a street to sell poultry... etc. During mask painting we learnt that different colours represent the persons character eg. red=righteous/good guy. It shows how ancient chinese pay attention to details and character development visually. Laoshe teahouse has many programs to entertain us. the 相声performance is funny. Through the mask painting lesson we learnt that different colour represent different meaning like black and red means brave, geeen means bad temper, white mean cao cao which is bad person and blue mean clever but cunning at the same time. During the school visit, the school envrionment is different from our school. Their education system is different too.  They dont have jc and poly after studying here they move on to unversity oversea. They also go oversea for more knowledges same as us now. But they go every term and for at leasg half a month. They also have a different assembly as they only conduct it on monday while we conduct it every day. We also learn that they couldnt have actual dragon boating as there isnt much river in beijing and safety reason as well hence they create a land dragon boating. I get to feel the team spirit ad well as the fun within it. At night we went to a teahouse where we watvh different type of show like bian lian, magic, puppet like mu ou and shuai jiao show. Also theres xiang sheng where they joke around letting the audience laugh along. They also demostrate the eightenn ways of cha dao. Firstly, we got to play 2 of their mid autumn festival games which were arrow throwing and inflatable dragon boating. The arrow throwing got me puzzled at first since there was quite a fair amount of wind then but wad surprised that it did not effect much due to the arrow having some weight to it. It was a really great feeling after accomplishing to just get 1 arrow in the tube. Secondly, the dragon boat race was also very enjoyable yet tiring at the same time. We got to learn the importance of teamwork through this game. It was not real dragon boating due to the lack of rivers around that area and also since it was not practical for the school to endanger their students in real dragon boating and also would be very troublesome to do so with a huge amount of people. Lastly, I was truely amazed by how the students and teachers were so bonded together, which was a very heartwarming sight to behold. Secondly, in Beijing international school, i learnt that we should be more creative for activities to be held inside or outside of school. For example, those activities planned by the students were very thoughtful for the dragon boat festival .
Thirdly, tea house was a good experience for us to understand more of an entertainment held in the past.”台上三分钟，台下十年功” meaning everything done on stage need practice to be perfect even though the performance last very short.
2. Firstly , in Beijing international no. 35 school, they have different programme in the morning before their lesson. Just like in Riverside Secondary School, we also have omms sharing and OMG english talks held in the school hall.
Secondly, we did mask used for chinese opera. From this activity, I learnt to be more persevere with work to be done within a few hours. Just like in school, we must finish our homework task by teachers before the dateline they set for us.
3.One thing that I will share with my friends is that in the past of China, people dont have clock or watches to check timing thus bell and drum are sound in the morning and night. Till now the buildings are still there .

I also sat in the class for the lesson observation .I attended the Chinese class and I enjoyed myself. Although I couldn't understand most of the class discussions I was still able to understand certain bits of information.It is really interesting to learn what they are learning in the school .the students were very friendly and accommodating to us even though we were awkward partly due to age gap etc.We discussed about 李清照 and her poems. 1. Firstly, is the 四合院 which is a courtyard  located at the centre of the beijing and in that courtyard there are four different buildings which is faced toward each other. The word si means means four which is the four houses. He means together in chinese. And yuan means yuan zi which means garden. That is why the place is called 四合院. In the shi he yuan the boys and girls sleep in different houses. The boys will all live in the right side of the 四合院 and the girls will live in the left side of the 四合院. In 四合院, they do not have toilets so if they want to go to the toilet, they will have to use the public toilets.
2. One difference that i see from today is the first stop of the day, the school campus. In the school, some of the students who live further from the school will stay in the school  just so that it will be convenient for them to reach school on time. While in singapore, they do not have a sleeping area for people to live in. Another difference that i see is the assembly for their school is really grand. They have their school students to march down the parade square while in singapore we just do a flag raising on the spot and not like them. 

3. Today i learnt something really interesting today which is In the past, the people do not have clocks to know the timings so they rely on the sound of the drums and bell. The sound of bell is in the morning and the sound of the drum is in the night time. So this is how they know the timings of the day.

The staff and students were extremely friendly and welcoming. We were able to attend their lessons and I got the chinese class. Their chinese standard is a lot higher than ours but I still try to keep up. And I did learn some things. (about 千古第一才女，李清照) Also, because of the recent 端午节 that just passed we were able to try a replacement of a dragon boat race and a chinese version of darts. I too learnt that the reason that they organise activities like this instead of going for actual dragon boating is not only due to safety and inpraticality but also due to Beijing's geographical location. Beijing isn't located near much rivers and is therefore hard for the school to bring them dragon boating. 
After the school visit we went to siheyuan for a trishaw ride. We also found out that the uncle who was cycling the trishaw isn't from Beijing but from Xi An(Shanxi province) Stating that he was here to just make a living to raise his family. I really admire that uncle for being able to move so far away from his hometown just to make a living plus his job isn't the easiest. Working from 7am to 6pm especially under the hot sun is really something really admirable. I too found out that Siheyuan is called that due to four houses facing north, south, east and west forming a square in the middle. Explaining 四合院. Which just means four(四）house together(合）forming a courtyard (院).
There, there is also a bell and drum tower as in the past there wasn't phones or watches so they relied on the sounds of the drums and bells to tell the time. We also managed to try mask painting learning some pretty interesting things as each colour means sonething. For example white means intelligence and red for bravery. Lastly we went to laoshe tea house where we were able to appreciate tea and some of the chinese culture. Like the Beijing opera and the 空竹, which is basically a giant yoyo like toy that people in China love to play. Tea plays a part in chinese history as since the times of the emperors tea is a widely consuned in the past and that there are proper authentic ways to brew tea. Overall today was an enriching and exciting day.

1. Guo Mo Ruo had also open the last second emperor coffin ,as without proper skills of managing the things after the grave had been open all the historical relic were oxidized into Ash .
Secondly , we did the painting of face mask .knowing there is a meaning to all the colors , example yellow ,gold is use for god like the monkey king .
Thirdly, we went to the beijing no.35 middle school to interact with them .we learn how Beijing teaching method is, and what subject they have .


2.Go for school visit , surprised that they do not have morning assembly they only come down to the parade square when flag raising starts .we go for math class and the teacher there very friendly ,she will speak English for those non-Chinese student to understand more as in china they mostly teach in Chinese for all subjects except English subject.
When it's recess time their lunch is something like buffet ,everyday they will have new menu .I find this interesting as from what I see from television show it is different.

smth different from what is presented in school: we attended beijing’s no.35 high school’s morning assembly. they start their assembly after their morning lessons by assembling in the parade square and standing at attention while watching the people who are going to do the morning assembly march forward and carry out flag raising. they would sing their national anthem (only on mondays) before beginning assembly (while standing in the sun). Compared to singapore, we also do the morning assembly in our parade square but we do not march through the crowd and we sing our national anthem everyday. we also start the day with our assembly rather than morning classes which bei jing does so.
smth i learnt: during our face painting exercise, i learnt that different colours and expressions represent different personalities and habits. for example, red faces mean that the person is a good person and is brave. green means the person does not think before doing anything and has a bad temper. blue means that they are cunning and scheming. yellow means that they are courageous and brave. if the mask has a 🌱 looking symbol it means they are an alcoholic.

Get to know the students better, their way of teaching is quite similar to what we experienced as they also have white board& visualiser the teacher will also stand in front and teach but the thing different is that the teacher is interacting with a smaller group of people about 20 while we have lesson with big classes. We also experienced eating in their canteen, their canteen is very different from us in the sense that their self serve their food while we buy our food from different stores and the store aunty/ uncle will prepare the food for us nicely. We also experienced different kind of thing they do during 端午节 for example we play the improvised dragon boat race as they do not have rivers around they improvised and make dragon boat inflatable and we have to carry it and run. This test on our teamwork and how we work together as one. We also tried out the game the ancient people play when they are drinking u basically have to throw the arrow into a wooden cylinder. It not easy and I’ve never seen one before in Singapore.i learnt that the education system in China is 6year primary, 3 year secondary,3 year Jc like thing and they go to university. For China their compulsory studies are 9 years. The students in the school today also have exchange programs like ya where they get to go to other countries probably once a term. We also learnt about face painting where we learn there are 4 type of faces, male,female, clown and one more. We also cycle around the hutong where we get to see houses the local people live in. I also learnt that siheyuan means all four side of the Buliding have houses. Different colour of the mask represents different character of the person. Siheyuan the area is a very ideal location for people to live in. There is a  drum tower and bell tower that will sound in the morning and night. It is used to tell the people living there the time as back then there is no clock or watches to show time.
The trishaw ride was used to transport goods and bring people to a certain place. The trishaw ride was being pulled by people on foot. Imagine pulling a trishaw ride walking or running on foot under the hot weather. Beijing international school was an eye opening experience for me. we visited students who are grade 11 which is two years older than us. the technology there was advanced. it helps the student to learn better. the environment was very clean and spacious. After studying in the school student will be transferred to different university of their own choices example, university of Canberra, university of South Australia. Generally the education system is different from Singapore.China students are needed to finish 9 years of study.
