I know this because the author states in the text " Iguaca! Iguaca! The parrots called when the hurricane blew down the old trees where they had their nests. After the hurricane passed the parrots flew through the tree tops to find new nesting holes." This shows that when the hurricanes came there trees with nests got destroyed so they had to find new ones.

The impact hurricanes have on the parrots are when a hurricane comes through it ruins their nests. The trees go down and they are destroyed. They have to find a new home which can be tricky because they want to find a safe home with good resources. When the text states that they yell "Iguaca Iguaca" it means they are yelling for help or they see something bad. The aftermath of everything they didn't have a home so it was harder to keep the population.

The impact that the hurricanes had on the Parrots was that the hurricanes would knock down the settlers buildings. This is bad because after one of the buildings they would build them back up using the trees that the parrots used as their homes. I know this because in the text it says "Each time the hurricanes destroyed their homes and schools, the settlers rebuilt them." It doesn't say directly that they used the trees but we can infer that they had use the tree because it was their only wood source.

They wanted to make sure they didn't go extinct. When they hatched they were released back to the wild. The rainforest was going to begin thriving. The text shows that " the scientists always left a least one egg or chick in each nest" They do that so they can stay safe and protected. The main purpose was so they could get big and stronger before getting released into the wild again.

I know that because the text stated, "Hurricane Hugo roared through the treetops of Puerto Rico in 1989. Iguaca! Iguaca! the parrots called as the winds blew down many of their tall trees. The hurricane wiped out crops and wrecked buildings and homes. In the aviary, the scientists worried about all the parrots. What if another bad hurricane blew down more trees? According the text "What if another bad hurricane blew down more trees?" this shows that if another hurricane would happen then there would be even less parrots, and even less trees and nests.

When Rio Abajo opened they faced some problems. First off thunderstorms caused the power to go off. The incubators would shut off. So they bought generators. They used them when the power went off. Which seemed to work well. They separated aggressive parrots away from gentle parrots. They caged young parrots with adult ones. They did this so all the parrots could live in peace. In 1999 they had 54 parrots. They needed to release some before they had too many so they did!

What caused the Puerto Rican Parrots to become so endangered was that there was a lot of destruction from hurricanes and other storms there and the problem was that these storms would happen a lot more than where we live. This meant that they would easily run out of food and get injured or possibly die. It was important for them to save the parrots for a lot of reasons. First of all, it was a part of their culture which was very important. Also, they helped keep the forest healthy. They were also a big role in the ecosystem. That is why saving the parrots was so important.

So each time there was a hurricane the population went down. Soon the population was lower than it should be. The scientists of Puerto Rico needed to help bring them back. That is why they made the Rio Abajo and Luquillo Aviary's. They hatched many parrots and released them and they set up nesting boxes for the parrots still in the wild. In 2006 they wanted to make a second flock that helped the population go up even more. Today more than 690 parrots are living peacefully in Puerto Rico all because scientists had faith in them.

Well, what caused the Puerto Rican parrots to become endangered was a combination of the hurricanes, people capturing them and using their trees for resources, and pearly-eyed thrashers trying to steal the parrots nesting holes, and is was important for the scientists to save them because they were part of the reason they became endangered and also they are rare birds. I know this because the text stated, "In the 1950s, birds called pearly-eyed thrashers moved into the rain forest and tried to steal the parrots’ nesting holes. Like clever thieves, these birds enter places where other birds are struggling to live and compete with them for nest sites. The parrots fought the thrashers, jabbing at them with their sharp beaks and defending their nests with harsh cries. But the parrots now had too many enemies and too few trees. The flock became smaller and smaller. By 1954, there were only two hundred parrots left," and also, "After Puerto Ricans gained American citizenship, many of them moved to the United States. Those who stayed in rural parts on the island built houses and farms in the areas where parrots had once lived. Many of the parrots’ tall, old trees were made into charcoal to use for cooking fires. And people still hunted and trapped the parrots," and lastly, "Hurricane Hugo roared through the treetops of Puerto Rico in 1989. Iguaca! Iguaca! the parrots called as the winds blew down many of their tall trees. The hurricane wiped out crops and wrecked buildings and homes. In the aviary, the scientists worried about all the parrots. What if another bad hurricane blew down more trees? What if the aviary was damaged?" That shows that the how the Puerto Rican parrots to became endangered was a combination of the hurricanes, people capturing them and using their trees for resources, and pearly-eyed thrashers trying to steal the parrots nesting holes, and it was important for the scientists to save them because they were part of the reason they became endangered and also they are rare birds. So therefore, how the Puerto Rican parrots to became endangered was a combination of the hurricanes, people capturing them and using their trees for resources, and pearly-eyed thrashers trying to steal the parrots nesting holes, and it was important for the scientists to save them because they were part of the reason they became endangered and also they are rare birds.
