This is brought up multiple times in the play; Mitch is different. He is sensitive and more timid. He is respectful and cares for his sick mother while Stanley is smacking Stella and throwing plates on the floor like an ape. When Mitch and Blanche first meet, we immediately observe the softer personality of Mitch through his body language and how he talks, especially towards the ladies. The helmet expresses the respect Mitch has for women. As we all know, knights in medieval times were chivalrous and showed women great respect, as Mitch does with Blanche and his sick mother. “How do you do, Miss Dubois”(Williams 51). “About the same, thanks. She appreciated your sending over that custard.-Excuse me, please”(Williams 51). This pertains to the theme of the new versus old south.
