Moving towards more sustainable production of clothing would obviously result in a lower profit. However, I believe that, while initial gains may be significantly lowered, the money required for health concerns caused by the pollution itself will be reduced (as there is less pollution), thus not impacting the economy as much as one might expect.
In other words, obvious actions such as raising environmental and waste standards are an important first step that is required for a healthier and more environmentally friendly society.

An obvious question in response to harm and irresponsible discharge of chemicals is why it is being discharged into rivers, rather than sewers or canals meant for waste. Presently, I would assume that either a), there are no such waterways, or b), they are too expensive for the desired profit margin of MNCs.
