The anonymous nature of online interactions can often times remove the filter of civility that people are typically expected to have when face-to-face. Even in online interactions that aren’t anonymous -- between family members, friends, or just strangers who can see one another’s names and pictures -- people might be tempted to say things that are critical or harmful to the other person, things they likely wouldn’t say in person. In my sketch, I’ve made the focal point a devilish-looking person with jagged teeth and horns, sitting in front a computer screen in a dark room. The observer can only assume what the person is up to online, but the implication is that it’s evil in nature. I drew influence from Santi di Tito’s “Portrait of Niccolò Machiavelli” (1469-1527) in regards to the uncanny, almost creepy facial expression of the subject. It’s no coincidence that the term “Machiavellian” often refers to devious behavior and dishonesty, which mirrors the theme of my sketch. Additionally, I incorporated elements of Francisco de Goya’s “The Third of May 1808” (1814), which has a stylized portrayal of its human subjects and uses a dark background juxtaposed with intense lighting from a single point (i.e. light cast from lantern on the focal point of the painting: a man with his arms in the air in surrender). In my sketch, the subject sits in a pitch black room with the only source of light being the light cast on his face from the computer monitor. The theme of Goya’s painting also parallels the subject of my sketch in way, as both speak to the horrible and immoral actions that humans are capable of when sufficiently motivated or protected from consequence. Particularly now with the discussion of hacking and fake news.  You might have made the image more pointed: some kind of reference to the election, images of donkeys or elephants, or even the candidates.
