The CDC preforms the following types of tests for the poliovirus:
- Culture (isolated from stool samples (most likely), from pharyngeal swabs, blood, or cerebrospinal fluid) 
- Intratypic differentiation
- Genome sequencing
- Serology

Prevention
Vaccines: there are two vaccines that can be used to prevent polio
1. IPV (inactivated poliovirus vaccine) is given as an injection in the patient's leg or arm depending on their age. Today, the US only uses IPV.
2. OPV (oral poliovirus vaccine) is delivered orally and used worldwide.

Treatment
Polio has no cure. Treatments can be preformed to mitigate symptoms, however, such as:
 - heat
- physical therapy
- antispasmodic drugs (to relax muscles)
