"Any institution which does not suppose the people good, and the magistrate corruptible, is evil." - Maximilien Robespierre. The french revolution was a period of change that they believed needed to happen after seeing the events of the American Revolution. They wanted to be more equal and to have a bigger voice in their nation. But the revolution was not only about equality it was also about how the people also wanted King Louis XVI gone due to his poor leadership and his lack of good decision-making for not only himself but also for the people. See another key factor for the revolution was also made by King Louis, it was the food and financial crisis. King Louis made himself and the people poor therefore many people not getting enough food. The main idea of the revolution was the idea of change and everyone coming together in order to see that change.

"Tell me, what confidence would we have....in the oaths of a king who had summoned the nation only to engage it to fill the abyss dug by the wastefulness of his ministers, of the household princes..." These are the words of Jean-Paul Marat who shared his thoughts on how King Louis XVI ruled before the French Revolution begun. The French Revolution was a time when the citizens that belonged to the third estate, anyone who was not a clergy or monarch, rose up against their king who didn't stand up and take care of his country. While the first and second estates lived with no issue, having full power above the third estate, they left their citizens to suffer through the awful living conditions that France was in. Eventually, the citizens had enough with their king. The radicals all banded together to capture the king and send him to death via public execution with the guillotine. The causes that drove the French people to start a revolution were the financial and food crisis that were happening during King Louis' rule, the weak leadership that the king showed, and how the people took the ideas from the Enlightenment and were able to create a government of their own that was ruled by the people.

It is estimated that 40,000 people were beheaded by the guillotine during the time of the French revolution. The French revolution was more than just be headings and executions of the royal family. The aim of the revolution was to overthrow the monarchy and to create a new and equal government system. Before the revolution, the nation was rules by one person, who at the time was King Louis XVI. The revolution took place from 1789-1799. The revolution occurred for many different various reason, but I believe that the three most important reasons that caused the revolution was the inequality between the french society, the weak leadership of King Louis XVI, and the great financial crisis of France during that time.

To begin with, one of the main ideas brought to light by the Age of Enlightenment was the Social Contract Theory, and the protection of natural rights. Many philosophers at the time, including John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and François-Marie Arouet, or known as Voltaire agreed with the idea that all men were born with natural rights, which includes the rights to life, liberty, and property. Out of all the philosophers that believed in natural rights, John Locke was the earliest of the bunch to write about it, discussing the idea and touching more on the topic in his work titled, “Two Treatises of Civil Government.” The idea of the Social Contract Theory was tied to natural rights, as it had been presented in 196 by Rousseau as a section of it reads,” Through a social contract, an entire society agrees to be governed by its general will.” Basically, the government and the people are accountable on an agreement where if the government is able to protect the people’s rights, the people exchange by giving back power, and if one side fails to follow their exchange, the people can overthrow the government or the government can misuse its power.

There are significant disagreement among historians of the French Revolution as to its causes. Social inequality was one of the major cause of the french revolution. Philosophers of the Enlightenment put ideas forward, John Locke a philosopher had an idea that a leader may only govern a society if he had the consent of those he governed. The rise cost of bread was very important when poor harvests caused the price of flour to increase dramatically, which in turn raised the price of bread. The inequalities of the clergy, nobles, and estate in the French Revolution and some Philosophers ideas with the government, with poor leadership from King Louis XVI.

During 1789 there were massive amounts of the 3rd estate, peasants who were revolting against their king. They were given many injustices, and have finally reached their breaking point. After storming the palace and kidnapping the king, and even later killing him. They created a government that gave everyone individual freedoms. During the French revolution, started in 1789-1799, there was 3 estate. The first estate consist of the clergy, second estate includes the nobles, and the 3rd state consist of everyone else. In the course of the Revolution, the third state weren't happy for the new changes. Finally, they had enough and started a revolution to revolt against the king. The king during this era was King Louis XVI. He spent most of the money on his own need rather than the peoples need. This made food very limited. This poor choice made King Louis a weak leader. He also sided with the clergy and nobles, making the rest of the people not equal.
