Homes were now smaller than pre-war homes so furniture had to be stacked or light enough to be moved easily. For example, the sofa bed and ironing boards were a invented in the 1950s. 
With new confidence paired with a rise of living standards the new 'contemporary' style was born. Females stemmed away from the "housewife" outlook and created a somewhat punk ethic before punk had even generally arose. The photo below show's the general fashion for part of the 1950's "girl gang" Teddy Girl movement. The drug was marketed as a mild sleeping pill safe even for pregnant women. However, it caused thousands of babies worldwide to be born with malformed limbs. The damage was revealed in 1962. Before then, every new drug was seen as beneficial. Now there was suspicion and rigorous testing. Thalidomide was developed in the 1950s by the West German pharmaceutical company .The best-known example of birth defects being caused by hazardous substances in the UK remains the babies born in the late 1950s and early 1960s with deformities caused by their mothers taking the drug thalidomide.

It was hailed as a "wonder drug" to treat conditions such as insomnia, morning sickness and depression and licensed in the UK in 1958.
