Do you know what causes mirages in the desert?
Its a deadly scenario played out in the desert dunes : A thirsty explorer spies an oasis in the distant sands. He runs towards the refreshing pools, but they recede into the distance, until he eventually collapses from thirst and exhaustion. The desert mirage has claimed another victim! Like rainbows, mirages are optical that an observer can never approach. And also like rainbows, they are caused by a trick of light. The air near the desert floor is much hotter than the air above it. This change in temperature bends, or refracts, the sunlight, making it appear like a cool pool of reflecting water on the desert floor.

A Fata Morgana is a superior mirage visible in a narrow band right above the horizon. 

Fata Morgana mirages significantly distort the object or objects on which they are based, often such that the object is completely unrecognizable. A Fata Morgana may be seen on land or at sea, in polar regions, or in deserts. It may involve almost any kind of distant object, including boats, islands, and the coastline.

Often, a Fata Morgana changes rapidly. The mirage comprises several inverted (upside down) and erect (right-side up) images that are stacked on top of one another.
