Cliche? Maybe. All I know is that this woman raised me well. She's a survivor, and never let what she endured negatively impact the way she generously loved not only me, but others. She is functionally my mother and father (since my actual father wasn't around). She worked two jobs to make ends meet for us, and despite doing so never missed an important (or even not so important) moment in my life. She has always been present and always been an example of good in the world. I doubt she makes the history books, yet she still shaped my history.

She spoke truth to power and in her writing often articulated what a lot of people who've come up in kind of toxic faith environments had been struggling to say for so long. She was an advocate for justice, and rights, and inclusivity. She emerged a positive example of a person of faith despite growing up in places of "faith" who did not share the above values. In a way she kind of rescued my own faith, but never through coercion or manipulation, but through caring about what's right and living a life that matched those convictions. (Pozdol)

Even as a white male (myself), I have often found politicians unrelatable and unlike anybody I really know or consider a friend. AOC changes that for me. Reese Witherspoon has done a lot of work recently to represent women in different ways in television. Her previous roles in movies (Legally Blonde is one of the most famous examples) reject stereotypes of women. She is also now a director and has created TV shows with mostly female casts based off books written by women (Little Fires Everywhere, Big Little Lies). Her shows create roles for female actresses of all ages in an industry where a woman's acting career is usually over by their mid twenties. The shows also depict what it is like to be a woman and a mother in today's society. She may be rich, privileged and blonde, but she is using her privilege to support women and I admire that.

Her stories about her childhood in Guatemala are Saturday morning traditions. We have had rough times with me being in 1st grade learning a language that she could not help me in, my father working tireless hours since my mother could no longer work with another child on the way. My Grandmother has really been a second mother to me. When my mother was pregnant with me, she was in a very good position in the company where she worked so my grandmother insisted that she would care for me 5 days a week . I would wake up in my grandmother's house and would only go home to sleep. Apart from everything she did for me in those 5 years where it was really just me and her, she was also had a very difficult life in Guatemala. My grandmother was only 16 when she married to a man 20 years her senior. She had 7 kids that she look after herself since her husband worked as a nurse during the night. She also had to look after her mother in law, who as the stereotype goes, hated her and would lie to my grandfather about other men being in the house which he thankfully never believed. My grandmother was just a teeenager and before her 20th birthday already had 3 kids and would still care for each of them. Even now she still in present in all of her 21 grandchildren's lives. I could never thank her enough for all she did .

My mom has worked all of my life. I was only 5 years old and my older brother was 7 when she had to start taking care of the both of us on her own. We were too young to understand that my dad would no longer be with us and I couldn't understand the pain she was dealing with. Now that I'm older I might have lost my father but she lost the person who was supposed to be by her side and watch us grow up. I remember being woken up for school and she'd already be at work. She'd get home after my brother and I would be home from school. Apart from working to provide for us, she had to do the cleaning, cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, buying our necessities, all on her own. I'm sure she's dealt with many hardships and despite being an immigrant she still got our little family by. Ever since I was little I've been her translator. When we were little she gave us everything a child could ever want and need. I know my mom is there to support me. She's raised me to be the person I am today and she knows she can trust me. It's because of her that I try so hard to create a bright future for myself and do as much as she did for me my whole life.

I went through my depression face for several years , I remember her staying with me in my room just hugging me and talking to me until I would fall asleep even though the next day she had to go to work at 6 in the morning which I know that I will in return I will give her so much , she has always dreamed with a nice mini mansion in Mexico with "La virgen de Guadalupe" outside the entrance which I know I feel capable of doing for her, and much more.
