WHITE PRIVILEGE

The benefit and advantage that one receives based on being part of the white race that affords greater opportunities for education, jobs, wealth, etc. It is how a white person benefits everyday from their 'whiteness'.

MY WHITENESS

As a member of the white race, I certainly benefit from privilege. I don't have to worry about bias, profiling, or discrimination. I function under the umbrella of privilege and can operate with only a sympathetic view of racism. I have the choice to deny the truth about racism, because racism has not shaped my reality, until now.

LINGUISTIC PRIVILEDGE

My students not only face the challenge of learning English to communicate, they face the monolingual ideology that is embedded in our society. This bias gives the power and privilege to those who have mastered Standard American English, and a lack of tolerance for any linguistic deviation. This leaves ELL students to feel isolated and to abandon their first language and customs, despite research that shows students who maintain their first language do better academically.

First, identify and recognize the truth about racism, in ourselves and in society. Then, reject it in practice, and discuss and face racism directly. Lastly, take action and do our part to shape policies, laws, and practices that are fair to all.
